It’s Like Next-Gen Monster Hunter, Except EA Is Making It

Gif: EA / Koei Tecmo / KotakuEA and Koei Tecmo are teaming up to create a Monster Hunter-style experience with Wild Hearts, they revealed today. A two-and-half minute debut trailer shows off lush environments, intimidating encounters, and some cool weaponry. The game also looks to be taking cues from Koei Tecmo’s monster-hunting Toukiden series, originally released on the Vita and older-generation PlayStation consoles. The new game is expected to launch in February. The Wild Hearts reveal trailer teases an untamed world of vicious monsters, with player characters outfitting themselves with a variety of armor, swords, and weird magic-tech stuff that has a distinctive ancient-Japanese flair. It shows players sneaking up on the beasts in tall grass, flying above them with cool tech, and in ge...

The Era Of $70 Games Truly Begins This Fall

The year is wrapping up, and that means we’re nearing the busiest time for video game releases. And even though covid-19 has thrown a wrench in the entire industry and led to numerous delays, a few big games are still launching in the next few weeks. But if you want to enjoy them, you’ll need to fork over 70 bucks (or more) as publishers begin transitioning into a new, more expensive era of gaming. Video games becoming more expensive isn’t entirely surprising. Since at least 2020, companies like Sony have made it clear that, moving forward, game prices would be going up from $60 to $70. But it’s still worth noting, as many big games this year released at $60 or less, that a majority of the biggest games coming out this fall and into early next year will now cost more, even on older console...

Everyone’s Making A New PlayStation Vita But Sony

Photo: Yoshikazu Tsuno (Getty Images)Razer teased a new 5G gaming handheld made in collaboration with Verizon and Qualcomm today. It joins the growing list of Switch-inspired devices taking advantage of Game Pass and other video game streaming libraries. Because in 2022 everyone’s betting on the successor to the PS Vita that Sony never made. What’s dead may never die.Details on Razer’s handheld are still scant. A short video shows it will have a built-in screen and dedicated controls, and will fire 5G signals directly into the ether with the click of a button. I’m sure the RGB Chroma will be wild. It reminds me a lot of Razer’s existing Kishi controller adapter for smartphones. We’re supposed to find out more, like whether the thing will cost a dumb amount of money, at the October 15 Razer...

Genshin Impact Devs Reveal Which Boss Has Beaten The Most Players

Image: HoYoverseYesterday, the developers of Genshin Impact posted the latest edition of the RPG’s online newsletter, which usually details fun statistics about the behaviors and experiences of its massive playerbase. Usually, they’re fun facts such as the number of times players have drowned, or the number of players who have maxed out the game’s weakest swords. This latest edition, however, contained something a little different. Now, for the first time, we know the identity of the most dangerous boss in all of Teyvat. And of course, it’s Azhdaha. Players originally meet Azhdaha during the main questline. While he was originally a benevolent old dragon who was pals with our buddy Zhongli, his mind has eroded over time. By the time that we fight him, he’s no longer the protector of the re...

Lewd Card Game Gets Shut Down By Kirby Studio

Haven’t you always wanted to play a card game featuring Kirby’s Chef Kawasaki wearing a series of microscopic bikinis? Me neither, but for a brief shining window this month, you theoretically could thanks to a Japanese fan creating an M-rated card game that delivered exactly that. But that’s all in the past as Kirby rights-holder HAL Laboratory has done what IP holders are wont to do, and asked for distribution to cease. As reported by Automaton Media, Chef Kawasaki’s Microbikini Karuta is a fan-made, physical card game inspired by a wave of memes that outfit the jumbo chef in a tight-fitting two-piece bathing suit. Created by artist Haru Uchida, the game was for sale on Booth.pm, the Japanese online marketplace for independent creators. A low price point apparently helped it sell out shor...

14 Shooters To Play While Waiting On Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Hm, a Ratchet & Clank game? On a COD-inspired slideshow? Strange. But not completely out of left field. Because of its emphasis on assault, I’d say Full Frontal Assault is one of the more COD-minded installments in the 20-year-old creature series Ratchet & Clank. Haha, kidding! Again! Full Frontal Assault has a fairly different approach to shooting than COD—it even has a different approach to it than other Ratchet & Clank games. Unlike those games, which are mostly third-person shooters with platforming elements, the PS3 download Full Frontal Assault prioritizes tower defense. In 2012, Stephen Totilo wrote on Kotaku that the game had parallels to multiplayer online battle arena League of Legends, and could be “as deeply engaging and as complex in strategy as its MOBA predecessor...

Far Cry 6 May Be Getting A GOTY Edition Despite Getting Almost No Awards

Image: UbisoftAn image found on the backend of the Xbox online store seems to reveal that Ubisoft is gearing up to launch a “Game Of The Year Upgrade Pass” for Far Cry 6. That’s…fine, I guess, but it raises the question: Which site out there thought it was the best game of 2021 and awarded it such an accolade? Last year’s Far Cry 6 was a good game. I said as much in my review. It’s a solid open-world shooter with some neat ideas, a wonderfully detailed tropical island to explore, and some floppy bits that don’t quite work. Hey, it’s a Ubisoft game, that last part is legally required. While I liked it, we here at Kotaku didn’t call it our Game of the Year or anything like that, and no other sites did, either. Or so I thought. As first spotted by data miner Aggiornamenti Lumia on Twitter, a l...

Chess Grandmaster Loses Job After Making Sexist Comments At Women’s Tournament

Screenshot: FIDEAt its highest levels, chess is a male-dominated activity. There are currently only 39 women who hold the International Chess Federation (FIDE)’s highest title of Grandmaster, compared to over a thousand male Grandmasters. Even “Woman Grandmaster,” a sort of consolation prize title from FIDE that requires a 2,300 rating instead of Grandmaster’s 2,500, has only a couple hundred recipients. This history is what made Israeli Grandmaster Ilya Smirin’s distasteful comments about a “woman grandmaster” during a live broadcast of the Women’s Grand Prix on September 27 so hurtful to women players, and why FIDE has decided to immediately remove him as an official commentator.Smirin claimed the title of Grandmaster in 1990 and once outplayed then-World Champion Vladimir Borisovich Kra...
