Google reportedly changed Stadia’s name to save it

After Google’s internal studies shut down, it was safe to say that Stadia flopped. Google knows this and is reportedly looking to rename the service to save it. That means giving it a new name and position in the market.

The report comes from Business Insiderand says that the new name of Google Stadia is Google Stream. The name certainly fits in better with other Google Suite apps and implies usage beyond gaming. That seems to be Google’s goal with the name change, as it has reportedly bought the service not only for game developers like Bungie and Capcom, but also companies like Peloton.

The uses of Google technology for game streaming are obvious, but meeting with a fitness company like Peloton is interesting. Of course, the technology could also be used for Peloton’s exercise streams, but it also involves using Google Stream for things like music, movies, and other entertainment. There are still plenty of great games on Stadia right now, but bringing AAA titles to the service hasn’t been Google’s priority in some time. There is “reduced interest in trading” for games like that, according to Business Insider’s report.

However, Google Stream, née Stadia, is still important enough to be included in Samsung’s new game hub. The manufacturer’s 2022 TV models will have Stadia, GeForce Now and other streaming services integrated.
