We look forward to when the OnePlus 10 Pro arrives from China, but our focus should perhaps be on a possible unannounced Ultra model.
technology expert (via PhoneArena) posted a tweet with the images you see here, taken from a patent filed by OnePlus in September. While at first glance it looks like the OnePlus 10 Pro we’re already familiar with, there’s one important difference.
Those would be the cameras inside the overflowing camera bump on the top left of the back of the phone. On the 10 Pro, there are four circles containing three cameras and a flash module. In these illustrations, the bottom two circles are removed to make way for a rectangular camera that opens with a long bar that extends to the right side of the camera bump. There’s also a small rectangle in the top right corner of the camera block that isn’t present on the OnePlus 10 Pro, which we assume is the relocated flash.
A camera that takes up this much space and uses a rectangular aperture suggests that it would be a periscope telephoto camera. While the OnePlus 10 Pro uses a decently powerful 3.3x telephoto camera, that’s not as high as some phones. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, for example, is rumored to have a 10x optical zoom telephoto camera. So if OnePlus wants to compete head-to-head in the “Ultra” phone segment, it needs more zoom power.
OnePlus has already partnered with camera maker Hasselblad for help with photography, but for hardware upgrades you only need to look to fellow phone company Oppo. Oppo and OnePlus merged last year, and while they operate somewhat independently, they share a lot of tech like fast charging and software. There’s no reason why that can’t be extended to camera equipment like Oppo’s recently announced MariSilicon NPU chip for better image processing. Previous Oppo phones like the Oppo Find X2 Pro have also used periscope zoom cameras, so OnePlus can build on the experience.
While you can buy the OnePlus 10 Pro in China, the phone’s launch in Europe and the US is still in the near future. We’ve wondered in the past if OnePlus would have a base OnePlus 10 on sale alongside the OnePlus 10 Pro, but there are now more rumors of an Ultra model than a vanilla one right now. Assuming it’s competitively priced against the Galaxy S22, Google Pixel 6 Pro, or iPhone 13 Pro, a OnePlus Ultra phone could offer a great alternative for users while still being one of the best phones, or even one of the best phones around. with camera. around.
