Egypt is coming off a victory over Ivory Coast in the round of 16, a match that ended in penalty kicks after neither team was able to score a goal throughout the match. Egypt won 5-4 on penalties, with Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah doing the final PK for the team.
The victory brings Egypt closer to its first AFCON title since 2010. That year, the team won the tournament for the third time in a row. Since then, the team has missed three AFCONs outright, and has one runner-up finish and one exit from the Round of 16.
Morocco defeated Malawi 2-1 in the round of 16. The team got goals from Sevilla, Youssef En-Nesyri, and PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi in the win. It was the first international goal since 2020 for En-Nsyri, while it was Hakimi’s second in the tournament.
Morocco is looking to advance beyond the quarter-finals for the first time since 2004, when it managed to advance to the final, where it was beaten by Tunisia.
