Microsoft almost fired the creator of Xbox for comparing playing video games to masturbating

Seamus Blackley, one of the main people responsible for the creation of the first Xbox, has told this week on Twitter a funny anecdote that took place in 2001, when Microsoft began to present its commitment to enter the video game sector with a home console. At that time the culture gamer was not as widespread as it may be now, or so Backley believed when he said a hairy phrase that almost cost him his job: “Playing video games is like masturbating: everybody does it, but nobody wants to talk about it.”

Apparently, this phrase caused a sensation among those who heard him say it and decided to put it as a prominent statement in an interview about the announcement of the first Xbox. According to Blackley himself, some of Microsoft’s most conservative executives read the newspaper and were alarmed to see such a comparison describing the product they were trying to sell. “This phrase almost cost me the dismissal at Microsot”, says who is considered the father of the first Xbox.

Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates were angry at those statements

Although to this day Blackley takes this situation with humor, it seems that in reality the stir that his sentence caused was quite serious: “It was the main quote that appeared in the East Side Journal and some of the conservative wives of certain executives read it and … let’s say they called me at building four,” he explains in one of his tweets. In another message, he acknowledges that it was not only the wives of the directors who felt annoyed by his statements: “I got into a lot of trouble for saying that (…) Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates were very upset with me for that comment.

The truth is that, as Seamus Blackley himself explains, those statements came to demonstrate the Xbox’s pioneering commitment to multiplayer gaming online, a feature that has become the industry standard and has brought with it a clear standardization of the video game.
