How to Download Videos from Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger has become one of the most convenient ways to communicate, allowing users to communicate with people anytime, anywhere for free. One of the advantages of Messenger is the ability to send videos. This way, you don’t have to share a video on your Facebook wall; instead, you can send it privately to the person or group it’s intended for.

Have you ever wanted to download videos directly from Facebook Messenger?

Have you wanted to save a video on your phone instead of entrusting it to the social network? Are you proud of a video you made or participated in and want to keep it on your own device? This tutorial will show you how to download videos from Facebook Messenger and store them on your own device.

For a while, you could watch a video about Facebook Messenger and hit the download icon at the bottom of the page to download the video. Then after a couple of Facebook updates, that download option seems to be gone.

What was once a super simple process has become a bit more difficult. I imagine that Facebook wants to keep you on the platform (aka walled garden) as much as possible and would rather you watch the video on their app rather than on your phone.

However, the Internet has other ideas, as always, and has come up with two alternative solutions. There are more options, but they tend to involve downloading and using random software, which is not ideal. Neither of these options require anything more than a web browser or web application.

The bottom line is that if the download option is no longer available from your Facebook Messenger, you can still download videos.

Before the download icon disappeared from the app, you could play videos directly from Facebook Messenger and then you would see a download option at the end.

Alternatively, on iPhones, you can long press on the video and see Save As a dialog option. If you no longer see that option, all is not lost as there are other ways to get what you want.

Download Facebook Messenger Videos on Windows

This approach works to download videos from Facebook Messenger using your Windows computer.

  1. Sign in to your Facebook account.
  2. Click the Messages icon to open your Chat history. Then go to the conversation with the video you want to download.
  3. On the left side of the video, you’ll find a three-dot (Plus) icon. Click on it and select save to facebook.
  4. then click See your saves Elements. This will open a new tab in your browser.
  5. In the new tab, you will see the my collections screen. Under Everything, you will see the video you saved.
  6. Click on the video and it will automatically download to your computer. You can find the video in the Downloads folder on your computer.
  7. Once you’ve downloaded the video, you can opt out of saving it from your Facebook account by clicking the three-dot icon next to the Add to Collection button and clicking Don’t Save.

Use a web browser hack

This is a widely publicized trick that allows you to download videos from Facebook Messenger. It extracts the URL of the video, changes it to the mobile version of the page and allows you to inspect the element and download the video. The process works like this:

  1. Navigate to the video you want to download.
  2. Right-click and select “Copy video URL at current time”.
  3. Paste that URL into a browser tab, remove the www. piece and replace it with m. to access the mobile version.
  4. Load the page and play the video.
  5. Right click and select Inspect or use Alt Option + Cmd + J on Mac.
  6. Locate the URL of the video, which ends in MP4, and copy it.
  7. Paste it into another tab and let it play.
  8. Right click on that video and select Save Video As.

This process is used on the Internet by all kinds of websites to isolate the video file to be downloaded. It works in most browsers that have a developer console, and while there are a few steps, it’s actually very simple to do.

Use FBdown.net to download videos from Facebook Messenger

FBdown.net is a video download website that can make downloading videos from Facebook Messenger simple. You still need to grab the video URL using steps 1-6, but instead of downloading it from a browser tab, you can use this web app. If you find Save As not working, this is where you should go.

  1. Follow steps 1-6 above to grab the video URL.
  2. navigate to FBdown.net.
  3. Paste the URL into the center box and hit Download.
  4. Download the video and save it to a location of your choice.

As long as you’ve captured the video URL correctly, the website will locate and identify the video and then download it to your device. It works on mobile devices and desktop computers. This method works quickly and efficiently. I tried it twice using the Brave browser on Windows 10 and it literally only took a few seconds to download a 30-second video from Facebook Messenger.

Download videos from Facebook Messenger on Android
