SPOILERS follow for Wanda Vision through its third episode.
A notable part of Wanda Vision has been the character of “Geraldine”, a name that caught the attention of many fans when we met her in the second episode of the program because we knew that it was not the real name of the character, since Teyonah Parris (Crazy men) was announced as Monica Rambeau in the series at San Diego Comic-Con 2019.
Monica was the young daughter of Carol Danvers’s best friend, Maria Rambeau, in the 1990s. captain marvel – a character who in the comics is a superhero in his own right, having been an Avenger (and even leading the team) and going by various names, including Captain Marvel, along with Photon, Pulsar, and Spectrum.
We’ll see more of Parris as Monica in Captain Marvel 2 , but in the meantime, as Wanda Vision continues, Juice Mobile talked to her about being introduced through the show’s sitcom reality and what it was like to film that big scene with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) at the end of the third episode.
GERALDINA FIND OUT
Monica calls herself Geraldine, albeit after a noticeable pause when she is asked her name, from the moment she is introduced. Wanda Vision, and Parris enjoyed how that would play into fans aware of who he was playing from the start. Parris said: “We know Geraldine and I think what’s really exciting and is going to be a bit of a mystery for the fans is trying to piece together well, ‘Who is Geraldine? Because we know that Teyonah is playing Monica…is it the same?’”
Of course, “Geraldine”, who appears to actually be a SWORD agent, accidentally reveals her cover at the end of the third episode, “Now in Color”, after Wanda mentions that she is a twin and Monica, apparently dating a bit. from a spell herself upon hearing Wanda say that, she notes that Pietro Maximoff was killed by Ultron. This results in Wanda shedding the sitcom happy-wife facade in the biggest — and easily most menacing — way we’ve seen for her since the show began.
When it came time to shoot that big scene with Olsen, Parris said, “Just watching Lizzie work… I’m so excited for the fans to really see her do her thing. She’s on full display and she really goes for it and she’s so grounded.”
Parris laughed that she was so impressed with Olsen’s performance that she probably got a little lost at the time of filming that scene, recalling, “Watching her go from one [demeanor] to the other, and being there a couple of times I’m sure I probably dumped her, I was so into it. I’m like ‘Yeah!’ And then I’m like, ‘Oh wait, I’m definitely supposed to be in this scene with you’, but I’m just looking at it!
That confrontation with Wanda results in Monica being kicked out of the sitcom world and sent back to the real world, as visually demonstrated when the show’s footage changes to a modern widescreen format and the whole thing is now shot cinematically in classic sitcom style spot. Wanda Vision is normally using.
Monica now becomes the first character we see in both worlds of the show, and Parris commented that when it came to that aspect, plus Wanda Vision‘s looking forward through different eras of sitcoms, “That was so much fun because you essentially have each of these decades and [also] you have the two different worlds. Being able to explore all of these different types of television, well, all of the sitcoms, but just the different decades and structure and parameters that occur for each of them, was really fun to study.”
As for the preparation, it was for Wanda Vision, Parris added: “We did a whole sitcom bootcamp to prepare for that and get in our mindset, so it was definitely a really fun experience.”
MONICA’S WONDERFUL FUTURE
Parris has just started in the MCU as she prepares to reprise her role as Monica in Captain Marvel 2 alongside Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Wonderful, after the latter is featured in his own Disney+ series later this year.
Parris said, of her growing role in the MCU: “It’s been an amazing experience so far, just the spirit of collaboration that’s been there in bringing the adult Monica back into the MCU. And they’ve been very open to my interpretation of who she is and I’m presenting what their ideas are about who she is and just bringing all of those things together. I am very excited for his future at the MCU. As we know, she is moving to Captain Marvel 2 with Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers, so I think there’s going to be some really fun stuff for us.”
