Activision Blizzard will be part of Microsoft after it was announced that they reached an agreement to sell the company. It was a news that shook the entire industry and it seemed almost impossible that we would see a deal this big.

However, in the world there are always visionaries with ideas that at first seem crazy, but that end up being part of the reality in which we all live. Such is the case of a subject who months ago proposed the idea that Xbox would buy Activision Blizzard, but many only saw it as crazy.

In case you missed it: The figure that Xbox will pay for Activision Blizzard exceeds the GDP of many Latin American countries

What happens is that the November 18, 2021, the reddit user known as Mylzb made a post on the r/Xbox subreddit. In it, he shared a proposal that was at least interesting: what if Xbox took advantage of Activision Blizzard’s bad moment and the fall in its shares to buy the company?

Few believed the deal was possible or that it made sense.

It was an idea that really generated controversy, getting more than 200 comments on reddit. The community discussed the issue and some thought it was a great idea, while others saw it as crazy.

For example, user Rwfleo considered it extremely complicated since Microsoft would have had to pay extra to get a company listed on the stock exchange. However, that was what happened in the end.

There is also the case of rabel10, a user who thought that Microsoft would not spend more than $50,000 million in a company for a segment that only represents 8% of its profits: “Microsoft has the money. However, it makes no sense to spend so much on games. They have a huge server business with Azure and they make a lot more money with Office and their other software offerings. You have to listen to the calls of investors. Xbox is not nearly the pillar that supports Microsoft as gamers think it is.

On the other hand, there are people who believed that Microsoft could not afford this purchase: “I doubt they could even with $100 million in cash. Warzone alone has brought them $2 billion in the last 365 days, and that’s far from their only intellectual property. If we take into account future earnings and a valuation multiple, that company is worth a lot of money,” said jandydand, a user who later edited his comment after discovering that ABK was worth $49 million and that made the operation viable.

Finally, there were also several subjects who assured that Microsoft would hardly have an interest in Activision Blizzard due to all the controversies that the company had experienced in recent years.

“They probably wouldn’t touch Activision Blizzard with a 10-foot pole. Most stocks are not easily bought. Also, PR would reverberate for any company trying to buy Activision Blizzard and that’s a real nightmare. Nobody, not even Microsoft, is thinking of buying Activision Blizzard. Also, it doesn’t really add anything to Microsoft that it doesn’t already have,” said xantos140.

Now, it should be noted that surely this subject was not the only one with this idea. Every once in a while there are people with ideas that they share on social networks and that lead to similar discussions. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the entire Internet this morning was filled with people claiming that they predicted this was going to happen at some point.

That said, we rescued this example from reddit as it demonstrates 2 things: first, how completely unexpected Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard turned out to be. The other is that we are in an industry where even the seemingly impossible can happen.

And you, did you imagine that something like this could happen? Tell us in the comments.
