Touching on controversial topics such as gender identity is, to a certain extent, normal in serious games with high narrative goals. Certainly, it is much less common for a title of an arcade nature to even venture to hint at a position on that topic. Perhaps that is the reason why some players expressed their discontent towards Buck Up And Drive!
In case you don’t know, Buck Up And Drive! is an arcade racing game that is available for PC via Steam since last January 10. Although it has very positive reviews on the Valve platform, some users have already expressed their dissatisfaction with the presence of flags that support the LGBTQIA + movement.
Because I was in a button-pushing mood today, Buck Up And Drive! is out on Steam!

Players lash out at the LGBTQIA+ flags of Buck Up And Drive!
Along the tracks of this racing video game we can see various billboards, similar to what happens with most titles of the genre. However, here it is possible to see some posters that occasionally show the rainbow flag.
The anger of a sector of the community lies in the fact that there is a switch in the options menu that, when activated, makes all billboards display the emblem of the LGBTQIA+ community. Despite being optional, some players claim that this feature tries to instill a political agenda.
“The last thing I expected from this game was politically charged messages. I guess I have to read more descriptions before buying games. Come on man, can’t we go a mile without having political messages in new arcade racing games?” wrote a user on Steam.
Funniest menu option ever put in a video game. Absolutely incredible

Apparently the developer behind Buck Up And Drive! he knew that the mere presence of the flags would cause controversy, so he decided to troll players with the switch.
“The game features a couple of pride flags (rainbow and trans) between the billboards on the sides of the road. Predicting how some people would react to its mere existence, I thought, ‘Screw it, I might as well have some fun with that,’” said Fábio Fontes, game developer.
At the time of this writing, only 14 of the 214 reviews of Buck Up And Drive! they are negative. However, it is noteworthy that the vast majority of unfavorable ratings refer to the LGBTQIA+ flags that appear in the video game.
But tell us, what do you think of this situation? Do you think the players are right to be angry? Let us read you in the comments.
