How to disable the voice assistant on your Samsung TV

When it comes to voice assistants, Bixby still doesn’t hold a candle to Alexa and Google Assistant. Some people love the Bixby assistant and find that it works very well for them.

But others aren’t too happy with the overall responsiveness and prefer to disable the feature altogether. However, this process is not completely clear or straightforward. In this article, we will show you how to disable Bixby on your Samsung TV.

Disable Bixby on Samsung TV

Bixby allows you to access all kinds of features on your Samsung TV. All you need is your voice. Call Bixby by name and ask it to turn down the volume or tell you what the weather is like in Tokyo.

But when Bixby doesn’t listen to your commands properly, or when other communication glitches occur, it can be a bit frustrating. To turn off Bixby on your TV, here’s what you need to do:

  1. On your Samsung remote, press the Home button.
  2. Use your left key to find the “Settings” option.
  3. Scroll down and select “General.”
  4. Now select “Bixby Voice Settings”.
  5. Next, select the “Wake up by voice” option.
  6. Bixby will be set to “On”. Use your remote to highlight “Off” and press OK on your remote.

After exiting the settings, be sure to confirm that the Bixby feature is indeed disabled. Just say “Hey Bixby,” and if the TV doesn’t wake up and waits for an additional command, that means you’ve successfully turned it off.

You should try several times, in a progressively higher tone of voice. One of the problems that some users have with Bixby is the inconsistency with which it responds to the volume of your voice.

Bixby activation sensitivity

Are you leaving Bixby because it reacted to your voice even when you weren’t speaking to it? Don’t worry, there is something you can do about it.

You can change the activation sensitivity of Bixby. Follow the same steps above to get to the “Voice Activation” setting. Once you’re there, leave the Bixby feature to “On” and move on to the voice sensitivity section.

You can choose to have the wake-up sensitivity set to low, medium, or high. Be sure to choose Low or Medium if you don’t want Bixby to wake up and start talking to you out of the blue.

And if you just don’t like the voice that’s speaking to you, you can choose another. Bixby is automatically set to “John”, a male voice. But there are four different voices in total. There are also “Julia”, “Lisa” and “Stephanie”.

Turn off voice guidance

Even when the Voice Assistant feature is turned off, there is still a way your Samsung TV could start talking to you. You may have somehow activated the Voice Guide feature which was designed to help visually impaired users.

Voice guidance provides narration to help you navigate your Samsung TV. But if you don’t need to turn on this accessibility feature, you can easily turn it off. This is how you do it:

  1. On your Samsung remote, press the Home button.
  2. Scroll left and select “Settings”.
  3. Select “General” and then select “Accessibility.”
  4. At the top of the menu, you will see “Voice Guide Settings”. Turn off the button next to it. It will go from green to gray.

That’s it – you have successfully disabled Voice Guide. You can follow the same steps if you need to turn it back on.

But if you are not sure if you want to disable this feature, but at the same time you are a bit annoyed with it, you can customize it. In the same settings, you can leave Voice Guide on, and then change the volume, speed, and pitch of the Guide.

Talk to your Samsung TV whenever you want

And when you don’t want to talk to him, you really don’t have to. Bixby Voice Assistant can be a fun and useful feature.

But if you’re wasting too much energy waking him up, it might not seem worth it. Also, if he’s waking up and talking to you when you weren’t expecting him, that could get creepy fast. So if you’re thinking of just turning it off for a while, now you know exactly how to do it.
