How to Create an Indent in Google Docs

Without further ado, let’s jump right into indenting Google Docs (web):

  1. Launch Google Docs in any browser on your computer and sign in.
  2. Open the document you want to edit.
  3. Make sure to enable the rule right away. Click the View tab (upper left corner of your screen) and then select Show Ruler from the dropdown menu.
  4. You will notice two blue arrows at the beginning of the ruler. One is the indent marker for the first line and the other is the left indent marker. They show you the path that your text will follow. To indent, select the paragraphs you want to adjust.
  5. Click the top marker (first line indent) and drag it to the right. Since this is a tricky button, feel free to zoom in on your browser.
  6. As you drag, a line will appear showing you the length of the indent (in inches). When you drop the first line marker, the paragraphs will be positioned accordingly, with the first line indented.
  7. If you use the left indent marker, you can indent the entire paragraph, not just the first line. Select the section(s) and drag the bottom marker (left indent) to the right. When you release it, all the paragraph lines will move to the right.

How to Create a Hanging Indent in Google Docs

You just learned how to do regular indentation in Google Docs. This is how you create a hanging indent:

  1. The hanging (or negative) indent is used by combining both indents. A negative indent is when all lines in a paragraph are indented except the first. Typically, you will create a hanging indent for bibliographies, citations, and references. To get started, select your section(s) and drag the bottom marker (left indent) to the right.
  2. Then drag the top marker (first line indent) to the left of the ruler.
  3. Doing so will un-indent the first line in your paragraph(s). All lines of the paragraph except the first will be indented.

Creating a hanging indent in Google Docs is as simple as that. Also, you can play around with the indents using the indent decrease and indent increase options. They should be in the top right corner of the screen, just above the ruler.

Using these options, you can decrease or increase the indent by half an inch for each click of each of the buttons. Markers are a much better way to indent to your liking.
