After delays, Verizon’s 5G offering helps the telco catch up with rivals AT&T and T-Mobile, but only certain phones and plans are supported.
de Verizon The 5G rollout, which started in late January, is bringing faster speeds and broader coverage after delays due to network security issues. The company will support 100 million customers in more than 17,000 different cities in the initial launch. Through 2022, the telecommunications company plans to expand its network to better compete with offerings from AT&T and T-Mobile. Despite Verizon’s select 5G availability in large, high-traffic areas such as airports and stadiums, the company’s network still pales in comparison to T-Mobile’s network after its merger with Sprint. However, only certain cell phones and plans will be able to take advantage of this new technology.
The 2022 launch is based on a type of 5G network known as a C-band. It broadcasts on a “mid-band” frequency, meaning its speed rating is between low-band and millimeter wave. The millimeter wave band is superior in speed tests, but due to its high frequency, the network operates in extremely small coverage areas. Simple obstructions, such as walls, cars, and buildings, can easily disrupt this high-speed network. Verizon’s C-band network provides some of the benefits of a high-speed network but with a coverage area accessible to more people.
Verizon’s 5G network is rated up to one gigabit per second under peak conditions within supported areas, which is a marked improvement over previous speed tests. The company says that large metropolitan areas, such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston and Miami, will be the first to receive support for the new 5G coverage. This is made possible by Verizon’s $ 50 billion investment in the C-band standard at an FCC auction last year. Now, most of the phones released last year are compatible with the new network, but there are caveats.
Phones and Plans Needed for Verizon 5G C Band
At the early 2022 launch of the Verizon network, only phones made with 5G by Apple and Samsung will be compatible with the C-band frequency. Starting with the iPhone 12 lineup, Apple introduced 5G support for its full list of iPhones. . From the compact iPhone 12 mini to the new flagship iPhone 13 Pro Max, any iPhone 12 or later supports the C-band 5G network. Despite having a newer chipset, the updated iPhone SE does not feature a 5G antenna band, so it is not compatible with the Verizon network.
The latest Samsung devices are supported from day one on the Verizon network. Traditional phones from the smartphone company in the S21 line will receive full C-band support. Even Samsung’s most innovative form factors, the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Galaxy Z Fold 3, meet internal requirements for compatibility. with 5G C-band. Third-party phones may require an update or software update to enable 5G C-band support. The Pixel 6 line, for example, will not support Verizon’s 5G C-band network at launch, but will receive the feature later in 2022. By the end of the year, Verizon expects all 5G phones sold on the carrier’s plans to be compatible with the latest Cellular Band.
Verizon requires signing up for an unlimited premium plan to take advantage of the faster speeds and broader coverage that comes with the 5G C-band. Cellular plans “Play More”, “Do More” and “Get More” are compatible with the new 5G network. Customers enrolled in other plans will not receive 5G C-band support, even if they use a compatible device. Other factors to consider include location, as the effectiveness and value proposition of 5G networks vary by state.
