Why are we still waiting on Mata Nui for a Bionicle reboot?

In an era where nostalgia sells so well, why hasn’t Lego rebooted the Bionicle toy line?

Where’s the Bionicle, Lego reboot? Do you hate money I can’t believe I have to bring this up. He has hugely popular intellectual property from the early 2000s and a whole generation of adults with disposable income who just want to escape their childhood. Look around you at what the rest of the toy industry is up to and give us the nostalgia we crave, okay?

Bionicle was a phenomenon when I was a child and was ahead of its time in many ways. Each buildable Bionicle figure was part of a collectible set that was released in waves throughout the year, similar to how the new Transformers and Pokémon Cards are released today. Instead of the regular and expensive Lego sets, the Bionicles were sold as individual figures for just $ 10 to $ 15. It was also a blind box component, which is very popular nowadays thanks to YouTube, but which was much less. common back then. It was also an expansive multimedia project with a multi-year history that spanned video games, movies, comics, and novels. There has never been anything like Bionicle, and it’s time to bring it back.

It’s such a huge dunk for Lego that its absence actually causes me physical pain. Millennials are big fans of nostalgia. The world is sliding into an inevitable climate apocalypse, so we are not having children. Real estate prices have risen exponentially while wages have stagnated, so we are not buying houses either. Our prospects are low and fatality is on the rise, so it’s no wonder so many Millennials are taking refuge in the safety and comfort of their childhoods.

We see it wherever we look. Pokémon cards skyrocketed in popularity early in the pandemic and were virtually unattainable for most of 2021 because the demand was so high. Hasbro brought the Beast Wars toys and reintroduced them in the War for Cybertron series on Netflix. She-Ra, Saved by the Bell, Rugrats, Fresh Prince, Animaniacs, The Powerpuff Girls, and Ducktales have been rebooted. Dunkaroos returned. The 3D Doritos are back. This isn’t just a pattern, it’s a full-blown nostalgia machine.

Lego seems to understand this to some degree. Just look at the Sonic the Hedgehog Lego set that launched this week. It’s not the movie version of Sonic, nor is it a link to Sonic Frontiers – it’s Green Hill Zone from the original ’90s version of Sonic, complete with badniks, power-ups, and Dr. Robotnik’s Eggmobile. We’ve seen Lego jump into popular trends as recently as Lego Dimensions, which caught the end of the toy craze coming to life. So I ask again, where the heck are my Bionicles?

We saw a reboot of the franchise in 2015, but in my opinion, it was too early. It has been 20 years since the arrival of the Toa Mata, and the people with the deepest connection to the Bionicle are now in their 20s and 30s and are eager to reconnect with the things they used to love. Bionicle won the fan vote for Lego’s 90th anniversary contest last year, which means it is competing for a new set designed by the Lego Ideas team in 2022. A commemorative set sounds great, but yes the Lego Group You are not really planning to restart Bionicle, you are making a big mistake.
