How to block or unblock someone on Discord

If you want to effectively manage your Discord server, you will need to know how to control conversation and handle toxicity online. While the vast majority of people just want to get on and have fun, there are always a few who seem to enjoy messing things up for others. This is why you need to know how to block and unblock someone on Discord.

Discord started out as a game chat server to take on TeamSpeak. He did that and won. Discord later became more than just games. Now it is used by people all over the world for all kinds of reasons, from business to hobbies and everything in between.

Sometimes it’s cultural, sometimes it’s just being an idiot. Hardly a day goes online where someone doesn’t get upset one way or another. Whether it’s hurling insults, sarcasm, being rude, spamming, talking trash, being offensive, or worse. Whatever happens, knowing how to handle it is key.

Discord provides several tools to control your chat server. The most used are locking and unlocking. You can also mute or kick or even ban someone from your channel. This tutorial will show you how.

Block someone on Discord

Blocking shouldn’t be the first thing you do, but since it’s in the title of this tutorial, we should tackle it first. There are two ways to block someone on Discord.

Block them from chat:

All you need to do to block someone from within a channel is right-click on their username and select ‘Block’.

To block someone from your profile:

  1. Click on the user’s name in the Direct Message portion of Discord.
  2. Click on their profile picture.
  3. Select the three-dot menu icon in the upper right.
  4. Select Block.

Blocking is limited to chat. The person you block will still be able to see what you type and see your status, but they will not be able to communicate with you through DM.

It may be more effective to simply silence the person. This turns off their noise without blocking them from completely contacting you.

Unblock someone on Discord

If you’ve blocked someone and they promise to be good, you may want to unblock them to see if they are true to their word. It’s as simple as blocking as long as you can find your username in your chat history or your friends’ list.

  1. Select the Friends tab from the DM list.
  2. Find the person you blocked on the blocked list.
  3. Click on their profile picture.
  4. Click on the three-dot menu icon in the upper right corner and select Unlock.

That person will now be able to interact with you on your chat server. Note that you’ll need to send them another friend request and have them accept it after you’ve unlocked them.

Silencing someone in disagreement

Muting is less permanent than blocking and will clear the waves of your noise, anyway for you. You will no longer hear anything they say on the server for that session.

  1. Right-click the person’s name in the user list on the left.
  2. Select Mute.

From now on, during that session, they can talk all they want, but you won’t hear anything! Moreover, they do not know that you have silenced them. Although it will quickly become obvious when you don’t react or respond …

So far we have approached someone who has been causing you problems individually. But what if they are generally annoying for the whole server? So you have two crowd control options, kick and ban. Both are useful in their own right, but should only be used in the worst case scenario.

Kick someone out of Discord chat

Kicking someone on Discord is the same as any other chat. They are booted from the server and will have to rejoin if they can. If the person is bothering everyone, this is the way to handle them.

  1. Right-click the person’s name in the user list on the left.
  2. Select Kick and enter a reason if desired.

Adding a reason is purely optional, but it will tell the person you kick exactly why it happened. Unless they’re completely dumb, they should know anyway, but it’s often good to put it in no uncertain terms.

Ban someone on Discord

Banning someone on Discord is really the measure of last resort. If you’ve silenced, blocked, or kicked someone and kept coming back for more, it’s time to bring out the hammer of prohibition. It’s the same as kicking, only permanent.

  1. Right-click on the person’s name in the user list on the left of the chat panel.
  2. Select Prohibit and enter a reason if you wish.

Again, adding a reason is optional, as only the person you are banning sees it.

Frequent questions

What happens when you block someone on Discord?

Unlike the blocking behaviors of many social media sites, Discord works a little differently. Mainly, because this is a group messaging app, it wouldn’t make much sense to hide your messages within a mutual channel. So even though Discord will hide messages in chat, you can click on them to read them.
