Sonic Frontiers, formerly known as Sonic Rangers, was seen in a short but interesting trailer during The Game Awards 2021 in which we got a fresh look at Sega’s new Blue Hedgehog adventure. According to reports from Gaming Bolt, the game was planned to be released sometime in 2021, although they decided to delay its release to improve its quality and offer a new delivery that lives up to expectations after a slack Sonic Forces that did not finish convincing the most ardent fans of the character. These statements by the Japanese company coincide with those of Takashi Iizuka, head of the Sonic Team, who said in late July that the title was announced prematurely and that he had development time left.
Sega stated during a question and answer session with investors that they were aiming to launch Sonic Frontiers in 2021 for coincide with the 30th anniversary of the saga, although they finally chose to delay the title a year in order to have additional development time to polish the mechanics and other aspects based on various internal tests performed. “It was originally scheduled to go on sale this year, the 30th anniversary of Sonic, but we have postponed the launch for a year to further refine the quality. During the development phase, we have been constantly conducting analysis to improve the quality of the title before its release, such as the introduction of play tests based on external evaluations, and we have the feeling that turn into a good game and there are high expectations placed on it“.
Avoiding mistakes made in the past
Sonic Frontiers promises to be the most ambitious title of the saga in recent years by betting on a open world as the main stage of the game and a freedom of movement never seen before. The fact that Sega has full confidence in their new game and that various tests are underway to improve its quality shows that, at the very least, they are putting all the meat on the grill and that avoid repeating past mistakes at all costs as what happened with Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, which was released too early to coincide with the 15th anniversary and ended up being one of the most controversial games of the character. Sonic Frontiers will be put on sale for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S, Nintendo Switch and PC at Christmas 2022.
