The premiere episode of The Boba Fett Book about Disney + it included many important revelations. SPOILERS go ahead, obviously. We got to see what the inside of a Sarlacc looks like, we met a droid voiced by Matt Berry, and we encountered a deadly new species of monster on Tatooine. Seriously, among all the marauders, scavengers, dragons, monster pits, and now totally kidnapped six-limbed centaur lizards, Tatooine has to be the worst planet in the galaxy. But the episode gave viewers an absolutely delightful reveal, a reveal that actually makes Tatooine seem a bit hospitable – we learned that Max Rebo survived the battle at the Great Pit of Carkoon.
Okay, to spell that out for everyone who didn’t spend their childhood memorizing Star Wars’ Essential Character Guide: Max Rebo is the fallen blue alien keyboard player from 1983 Return of the Jedi (not to be confused with Droopy McCool, Rebo’s trumpeter). The Max Rebo Band provided entertainment at Jabba’s Palace, and that included concerts on Jabba’s sailing barge. That is exactly where Max Rebo was last seen in Return of the Jedi. It was shown on Jabba’s sailing barge just before Luke Skywalker and the rest of our heroes blew up the entire ship during their escape from the clutches of the Sarlaac.
Given that no creature was shown leaving the ship or walking away from that explosion, it’s easy to assume that Rebo was one of the many, many victims. But luckily The Boba Fett Book reveals that Max Rebo lived to tickle more ivories!
In the episode, Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and two Gamorrean bodyguards visit a cantina run by Garsa Fwip (Jennifer Beals). And who does Fwip have on the payroll? Good old Max Rebo!
We see Rebo jamming with a guitarist Bith (there’s no confirmation if it’s Figrin D’an, making this supergroup the Star Wars equivalent of the Traveling Wilburys). The two are backed by an astromech droid percussionist who, as you know, will be getting an amazing action figure sometime in 2022.
This is a huge success story for Max Rebo. Not only did our favorite somehow survive a truly catastrophic incident in the middle of nowhere, but he also booked a concert (hopefully a stable one) at the nicest establishment we’ve seen on Tatooine. Jennifer Beals runs the cleanest and quietest canteen on the planet. No one is being fed hungry monsters or had their arm cut off. You love to see it!
You know what else we would love to see? A Max Rebo Band reunion tour with Droopy and Sy Snootles. Surely The Boba Fett Book you may find time for that in the next few months. Or, you know, maybe Garsa Fwip could hire Star Waver from Star Wars: Visiones Act “Galactic Dreamer” in real action.
New episodes of The Boba Fett Book premiere on Disney + on Wednesdays.
