How to play with other regions of Valorant

Testing your skills against players from all over the world not only allows you to play with friends in other regions, it makes victory that much sweeter if you could improve your stats on a world stage. Unfortunately, as of Update 2.06, Riot has not implemented a way for players to jump into matches with teammates from other regions.

While Riot Games says plans to unlock regions are in the works, these plans have yet to come to fruition. So, until then, find out how to bypass the region lockdown, as well as the answers to other pressing questions about the Valorant regions.

Use VPN with a new registration to play Valorant in other regions

As mentioned above, you can’t play Valorant with players in other regions, at least not yet. Although the developers have plans to unlock other regions, they seem to be backtracking with the removal of the region option from the login screen.

Today, you’re stuck playing Valorant in the region you signed up for… or are you?

There are a couple of things to know about Riot / Valorant accounts before trying this method mentioned in the title:

1. Your Valorant account is linked to your Riot account.

If you’re a longtime League of Legends (LOL) player, you may already be familiar with this concept because Riot has slowly moved from game-specific accounts to general Riot accounts. On the bright side, this makes it easier for players to enter Riot’s growing catalog of games without having to create a new account for each new entry.

The downside to this transition is that everything is linked to one account, and if you can’t change regions, that also means you can’t bring your weapons, skins, and abilities with you when you create a new one.

2. Riot automatically assigns your region when you sign up for a new account.

Unlike other multiplayer games like Apex Legends and Overwatch, you cannot choose your region when you sign up for a new account. This is a blessing in disguise for some new players who take the guesswork out of choosing a region. It can also work to the benefit of developers because they have reliable figures to plan for growth accordingly.

However, if you plan to play a game with friends from other regions, Riot Games will not allow you to access a friend’s regional servers, at least not yet.

3. New VPN-enabled accounts are not without problems.

Using a VPN is currently the only way to overcome region lockdown when Riot assigns new accounts to regional servers. However, there are some drawbacks to creating an account this way, so you may want to consider them before moving on to the Valorant VPN instructions. Some drawbacks include:

  • You have to start over at the bottom. None of your previous abilities, weapons, skins, or agents carry over to the new account.
  • Creating a new VPN account for Valorant only applies to a single region. If you have friends in multiple regions, you will need to create new accounts for each region.
  • You may see a higher ping than you are used to in your original region, depending on which region you choose. Most players, however, feel that it is a valid commitment if they can play with their friends.

Despite these drawbacks, many gamers still find that using a VPN is better than not playing with friends. If you’re ready to jump to a friend’s region with a new VPN-enabled account, check out the steps below:

  1. Start your VPN and choose a location for your new Riot account. Remember, Riot will activate whenever your VPN redirects your IP when you first create an account, so choose a location that corresponds to the region you want.
  2. Go to the official Riot Games website for Valorant and press the “Play Now” button in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. In the new “Set up to play” window, select “Create one” to create a new account.
  4. After choosing the new account option, you will be redirected to Riot’s new account and authentication page. Follow the prompts to create a new account.

There are various reports on whether you need to have your VPN active when you start the game or simply during the new account process. If you want to err on the side of caution, it doesn’t hurt to have your VPN active while you play, but some players can play games in their new region without it.

Alternatively, you can always ask Riot Games to permanently move your account to another region. There is no guarantee that you will get the change you requested, but if you have a viable reason, your request may be granted.

To change the region associated with your Riot ID permanently, simply go to the support page on the official Riot website and submit a request. Remember that if by chance Riot decides to grant your request, the change is permanent. If you find out that you want to change your region to the original later, you will have to wait until the developers unlock the region changes for the game or create a separate account using a VPN.

Frequent questions

How do you check your current region?

You can check your current region for Riot Games by logging into your account on their official website. The landing page will have all of your personal information, including your ID and Riot tagline.

Go to the second section, called “Personal Information” and check the “Country / Region” text box below your registered email address. This is your registered region for your Riot account.

How do you change region?

In the past, you could change regions on your Riot account page for all of their games. However, since they updated their system, they removed the ability to change regions, and players are now locked into the region they had when they initially signed up for their account.

The game company’s developers say that unlocking regions and giving players the ability to jump regions again is one of their priorities and should be released sometime in 2021. However, as of Update 2.06, the situation changes. Region has not changed. The only way you can “change” region is to create a new account with an active VPN.

Unfortunately, you cannot transfer your progress or rewards from one account to another. You will have to start over from scratch for each new account that you create.

You can qualify for an account change through the support page. However, they only allow changes if your current region is wrong and the change is permanent. You can see if you qualify for a region change by going to this support page and scroll to the bottom and press the “Verify” button.

Hop regions with a reliable VPN

If you don’t have a VPN yet, there are plenty of reliable ones available online, and don’t worry about VPN fees. Many players use a VPN free trial to sign up for their new accounts and simply cancel it afterward. If you choose to buy a plan, be sure to do your research and find out if the one you chose will work on a variety of fronts. There is no use incurring a new monthly fee for a service that you may not need once Riot changes its regional blocking policy.
