The streaming platform was first launched in 2008 as an external device that offers users the opportunity to access some of their favorite services, namely Netflix, directly through their televisions rather than online. After nearly a decade of operation, Roku would finally launch its own streaming channel in late 2017 featuring movies and TV shows from major studios, including Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros., Disney, and Universal.

The Roku channel has grown over the years, with a larger library of free titles for users to stream and has since expanded to the UK in early 2020 with a different selection of movies and TV shows. Although Roku has been successful, it has faced occasional controversies, including the near-loss of YouTube and YouTube TV apps after months of contract disputes before reaching a new deal earlier this month. After a hectic year of people staying home, Roku has a special treat for its users to crown 2021.

In honor of the incoming new year, Roku recommends organizes a special “Year in Streaming”, which Juice Mobile has the exclusive trailers for. The videos provide a sneak peek into the holiday celebration that has been exploring one of the biggest years for broadcasting titles and featuring some of the guest stars, some of whom include Cheryl Hines, Blake Anderson, Gillian Jacobs and Adam Pally. The “Year in Streaming” special comes from Roku’s free weekly entertainment show, Roku Recommends, hosted by Maria Menounos and Andrew Hawkins, providing viewers with the best movie and TV recommendations of the week. The special certainly seems to be a fun way to close out the year, that is, with your various special guests, including Amy Ryan from Hulu’s hit new series. Only murders in the building and Liza Katzer and Jamie Lee, the producers behind Apple’s hit comedy Ted Lasso. Given that Roku has over 56 million users, it will also be interesting to know which movie and TV projects end up on the top streaming charts of the year.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic keeping people trapped in their homes, many streaming platforms saw a huge increase in their audience, although one ultimately suffered when Quibi saw a disastrous launch. Fortunately for the creatives behind the titles on the shorter service, Roku would later acquire Quibi’s library of titles and rename them Roku Originals, including the full-length comedy. RENO 911! and action comedy The Hart. Only time will tell if these titles end up on the top broadcast charts when The year of Roku in streaming The special begins airing on December 27.
