There is a new one Dark souls I play on the horizon, but not necessarily in the way you would expect. Steamforged Games, the creator of the board game Dark Souls, announced (via Gamespot) who is publishing a new Dark Souls pencil and paper RPG. And if past quality is any indication, it should be a treat for fans of both the tabletop and the Dark Souls franchise.
What’s interesting is that the announcement tweet mentions Lothric and The Unkindled, both references to Dark Souls 3. It certainly looks like the Lothric setting will, for now at least, be the main setting for the TTRPG. Of course, future expansion books can potentially add new settings and lore, but for now, Dark Souls 3 fans will want to pay attention.

This is not the first RPG that Steamforged has released. As Gamespot points out, their Epic Encounters series is based on the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons, so Dark Souls TTRPG could be based on that system, but there is no guarantee yet that that is what the company will use. We’ll have to wait and see.
Dark Souls remains a world-building masterclass and launched a genre. Elden Ring, the next game from the Dark Souls developer, seeks to evolve the formula in ways that are still familiar to Dark Souls fans. Even the story trailer is depressing enough to be for a Souls game.
We don’t know a release date for the tabletop RPG yet, but you can sign up for a mailing list to get the latest updates on the game. here.
