How to do a duet on TikTok

It’s no wonder TikTok is gaining more and more popularity. With cool features, excellent editing skills, and an incredibly wide music selection, users around the world create content every day.

One of the most popular features of TikTok, a duet, allows you to use TikTok alongside other people’s videos. This can be quite useful for those who want to grow their following on TikTok, as you could do a duet of a video that went viral, putting your own content in front of so many or near so many eyes.

However, how do you do a duet with someone’s video? That’s something that may not be immediately clear, but it’s easy to do! Follow below and we’ll show you how you can do your first duet on TikTok.

What is a duet?

If you’re not quite sure what a duet on TikTok is, you can basically imagine it as a reaction or parody of an original video on the TikTok platform. Essentially, you come across a video that you think you can add some fun or other quality content to, and you want to create your own spin-off. You can do that with a duet.

A duet places the original video on one side of the screen, and then your parody, or what you film, is on the other side of the screen. So a duet is a side-by-side video, where you try to add something fun and entertaining in the passage of the original TikTok video that you’re duetting.

Before the duet …

There are a few things you need to know before you go and do a video duet. The first is that the “duet” option is not always available. This is because TikTok users can disable it for their videos, not wanting anyone to duet their video for one reason or another. They may see it as content theft, or maybe they don’t want random people to screw up their brand, the reasons are endless. And either way, the user turns the video duets on or off. There’s no way to avoid it.

That being said, when the duo tool is available, try to duet with people from your follower or view the count range. As your fans and followers grow, start duets with larger and larger accounts, until you’re producing your own viral videos!

How to do a duet

When the feature is available, it’s pretty easy to duet with someone on TikTok. First, make sure your TikTok app has the latest version and then open it.

Now, you can scroll through your own feed, or the For You page, and find a video that you think you can duo.

Once you think you’ve found the perfect video, hit the share button.

If dueting is enabled on TikTok, you will see the Duet in the lower left corner of the pop-up window. Play it. You’ll see a loading screen for a couple of seconds to minutes while TikTok sets things up.

Finally, you will see the Duet screen. This is where the magic happens. You can press the big red button to record your duet (see here how to record without holding down) and there are tons of tools on the side of the screen to edit your duet. It has various video effects, filters, and video speeds that you can select.

Once you’re done, you can hit the check mark that appears on the right to go to another editing screen. Here you can add more filters, stickers, special effects and more.

Once you have finished editing your video, press next, fill in the description and title of the video, and then press the Mail button. Your own duet is now on TikTok. Congratulations!

Duet feature troubleshooting

TikTok is not without its flaws and several users have reported issues with the Duet feature.

Aside from the fact that the video you’re trying to interact with may not have the feature turned on, there are a few other things to check. If you’re sure a video should allow you to duet, follow some basic troubleshooting steps.

  • Update the app: go to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and type TikTok. If an update is available, you will see it where the “install” or “get” button should be.
  • Close the application and reopen it – the problem could be a simple error. Close the app and restart it, then try the Duet feature again.
  • Clear the cache: If you are using an Android, go to Settings> Applications> TikTok> Storage> Clear cache. If you are using an iPhone, go to Settings> TikTok> Download app. Note: This will delete all your drafts, so be careful.
  • Check your internet connection – If you are on WiFi, try switching to cellular data and vice versa.

If none of these work for you, it may be a problem with the app. You can check the DownDetector website for known issues or use the TikTok support link for more personalized assistance.

Lastly, you can always message the creator to see if they have Duet turned off. Although not all creators accept DM from anyone, it is worth a try. They should go to Privacy in the TikTok Settings, touch ‘Privacy’ and activate the appropriate option for Duets.

Frequent questions

What happens to my videos after I disable the feature?

If someone has already duetted your video and you decide to disable the feature, the other person’s version remains. The same goes for deleted videos.

But, if someone is doing something with your content, you can report it to TikTok. Assuming the added content violates the TikTok community guidelines, the support team will remove it.

Can I prevent a person from doing a duet in my videos?

The only way to do this is to block the account of the other users. Some users have a problem with harassment (i.e. a person doing a duet or stitch with all their videos), in this case it is useful to block the user.

Closure

As you can see, starting a duet with someone is extremely easy. The hardest part of creating a duet is trying to create fun or quality content that adds to the original video. And don’t worry, you’ll have a lot of duets that just don’t work or are a flop on TikTok. That can be daunting – you’re putting yourself out there and expecting people to accept you. Unfortunately, the Internet can be a cruel place.

But don’t be discouraged – keep creating content, and eventually you’ll have your own hit or viral video that everybody will love. Happy TikTok-ing!
