Hollow Knight: Silksong doesn’t have a release date yet, but Ender Lilies might just be the perfect game to scratch off that grumpy Metroidvania itch.
Hollow Knight: Silk Ridge it will be the second time players have accompanied Hornet on a mission through a strange realm. Despite the hype, gamers still don’t know when they’ll be able to play it. The original Hollow knight was a surprise success thanks to its unique aesthetic, moody vibe, and deep, methodical combat, which impressed many fans who continue to wait for the sequel. One game that could help them recover is Lilies of ender, which emphasizes many of the same themes, but with a rather unique twist.
Ender’s Lilies: Quietus of the Knights it is like Hollow knight, a 2D-style metroidvania adventure platformer. In it, players control the priestess Lily, the last of her kind, who will have to travel through the kingdom to purify the undead and use her powers to progress and stop the terrible eternal rain on her home. Easier said than done, as the undead are plentiful and some of them are incredibly powerful.
Ender Lilies is not an aspiring hollow knight
Although the premise, mood, and settings are somewhat similar to Hollow knight, there is a uniqueness in Adglobe and Live Wire Lilies of ender. The main difference is that, unlike Hornet, Lily does not prepare for combat, but uses spirits to fight. Your first ally is a knight who had sworn to protect the previous priestess, but as you progress through the game and defeat enemies, you will increase your abilities and add more of the enemies’ arsenal to your capabilities. The key to victory will be customizing the main character’s toolset to work best in any situation.
Lilies of enderCombat is more fluid than other Metroidvania games of this style, as Lily herself will move and dodge as the spirits punish her enemies. Through exploration, players will find “boss” versions of regular enemies that grant them new abilities, but the ones that actually unlock new areas and allow progress are discarded by the bosses themselves. It is from here that players will get double jumps, dashes, etc. It is through these abilities that previously inaccessible areas become open and ripe for exploration.
Another thing to keep in mind when playing Lilies of ender is that, in a sense, it is very different from Soulslike games in general. By dropping the mechanic that players must go to find their “souls” after dying, this makes for a much more relaxed experience in which players learn from their mistakes rather than trying to force a perfect run. Here, death has no consequence other than having to try again from the last checkpoint. And, because the challenge level is tough but fair, players will need to try again a bit, especially when fighting. Lilies of ender‘bosses, who are incredibly memorable.
Lilies of ender has a lot of content for Hollow knight players, as the challenge, incredible art style, meditative exploration and intense moments of action are there. They will also be able to dive deep into the lore by reviewing the journal entries and learning more about the tragedy that befell this realm. While the combat feels completely different, it’s both the combination of its uniqueness and the similarities to Hornet’s adventure that makes this game a standout piece. Still, hopefully the next Cherry Games entry will be out soon, but until then, Lilies of ender can scratch a similar itch.
Ender’s Lilies: Quietus Of The Knights It is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
