Big reveals and twists and turns occurred in every entry in the franchise this year, confusing expectations and setting possibilities for the future that fans might not have anticipated.
The most shocking moments in the MCU in 2021 also deepened and broadened the entire franchise, either connecting it more deeply with the lore of Marvel Comics or, in some cases, other unrelated live-action franchises. Although fans had been wildly speculating about the possibilities of non-MCU characters appearing on the Netflix Marvel series or beyond, the moment was still shocking and exciting.
The one that remains
The Loki The series was about time travel and alternate realities, which is why some fans had speculated about the appearance of Kang The Conqueror. But it was a shocking moment when Jonathan Majors, who plays Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummania, emerged from behind a door in the season finale.
Although He Who Remains is a powerful variant of Kang The Conqueror, and not exactly the supervillain himself, the appearance of Majors heralds the impending invasion of infinite variants of the classic Marvel villain, sure to wreak havoc throughout the MCU.
The mystery of the ten rings
The post-credits scene of Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings sets up one of the MCU’s biggest new mysteries. Wong explains to Shang-Chi and Katy that the rings have no obvious origin in magic or the cosmos, but are transmitting a beacon to someone somewhere.
This completely unexpected development runs counter to the origin of the ring comics, which were created by the Makluan alien race. There are many theories about the origin of the Ten Rings in the MCU, setting up many intriguing possibilities for the future.
Comic book fans know that Dane Whitman is the Black Knight, and eternal establishes his origin as that character in the MCU in his post-credits scene. That scene with one of the most shocking moments in the MCU, when an unexpected voice speaks from off camera. The voice belongs to Mahershala Ali, who plays Blade in the MCU.
Fans knew that Blade would be coming to the franchise in the future, but his first cameo in the MCU was completely unexpected, especially since his connection to the Black Knight in Marvel Comics isn’t that strong. However, they do have a connection through an organization called M: 13, which potentially sets that up in live action.
Things are about to get weird
One of the most shocking MCU moments of 2021 has arrived The Falcon and the Winter Soldier when Julia Louis-Dreyfus made a completely unexpected cameo. Even more surprising is the importance that the Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine has acquired.
The Contessa recruits John Walker into a secret organization, saying “Things are about to get weird.” He also recruits Yelena in the post-credits scene of Black widow, potentially setting up a Dark Avengers of Thunderbolts team in the MCU.
Laura Barton is a nightingale
There were many not-so-subtle clues that Laura Barton was a Mockingbird in the Hawkeye series, but the final reveal was still shocking for fans. When Laura Barton hands over the Rolex watch recovered from the old Avengers compound, fans discover its importance to her.
The back of the watch is engraved with the SHIELD logo and the number 19. In Marvel Comics, Mockingbird was Agent 19 and one of the best spies in the Marvel Universe. She was also married to Clint Barton, but her name was Bobbi Morse.
Kingpin is back
Many fans were waiting, but few could have anticipated that Vincent D’Onofrio would return as Kingpin would return in the MCU. There were as many not-so-subtle clues about Kingpin as the show’s big bad as there were for Mockingbird, and the villain was revealed in episode five.
The return of D’Onofrio was pointed out that the Netflix Marvel shows are canon within the MCU, an open question since they ended. He also promises great things to come, as he is not the only Marvel Netflix character to appear in the MCU in 2021.
The return of Daredevil
One of the most shocking MCU moments of 2021 and one of the most exciting was Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Although it was just a quick cameo, it was an important moment for fans of the Netflix version of the character.
With Daredevil and Kingpin appearing within days of each other in the MCU, their paths will very likely cross again. One place they could meet is in the next Eco series, with Maya Lopez, who has strong ties to both men at Marvel Comics.
Aunt May dies
One of the most shocking MCU moments of 2021 was also one of the saddest. The tragic death of Aunt May at the hands of the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home it was as heartbreaking as it was unexpected, especially in the quest to help Norman Osborn.
Aunt May’s death did serve a purpose and was very similar to that of Uncle Ben from the Spider-Man comics. He even utters his iconic line: “With great power, there must also be great responsibility,” which is Spider-Man’s guiding principle in life.
Strange dark doctor
A shocking moment for fans came at the end of No Way Home, in the final moments of the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Insanity. The trailer ends with the encounter of the Sorcerer Supreme who appears to be his dark variant of the What if..? animated series.
This revelation sets up a major confrontation as the dark Doctor Strange from What if..? destroyed his universe trying to alter time. The same could be happening in the next movie, as it appears that reality is disintegrating outside of the Sanctum Santorum in the same way.
The three spider men
By far the biggest and most welcome impact of the MCU in 2021 was the return of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man in No way home. While highly anticipated, Garfield repeatedly denied it throughout the year, the moment continued to be a huge shock to many judging by audience reactions.
The reunion of the three Spider-Men turned out to be one of the most unexpected moments in the MCU, especially in the way it felt essential to the film. It was more than a glorified cameo, and both of the returning actors were important parts of the story.
