In recent years, several cases of discrimination and toxic work environments have been uncovered in different video game companies. One of the most notorious happened at Riot Games, which began in 2018 after a class action lawsuit filed by former company employees, in which they accused her of gender discrimination. After a long legal process, an agreement has already been reached in which Riot Games will pay $ 100 million.
As reported Kotaku, Riot Games agreed to pay $ 80 million to the people who were part of the class action lawsuit. This includes all individuals who have worked at Riot Games from 2014 to date who identify as female. In addition, you will have to pay an additional $ 20 million that will cover legal fees and other expenses related to the legal process.
As part of the agreement, Riot Games also agreed to be supervised for 3 years by a third party that will be approved by the company and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH). The objective will be to monitor that there is equitable payment and that there are no cases of discrimination.
“It’s a great day for the women of Riot Games – and for women in all video game and technology companies – who deserve a workplace free from harassment and discrimination,” said Genie Harrison, attorney who represented the plaintiffs, in an official statement. “We appreciate Riot’s introspection and work since 2018 to become a more diverse and inclusive company, its willingness to take responsibility for its past, and its commitment to continuing justice and equality in the future.”
Now it is only expected that the United States court will approve the agreement so that it becomes effective.

Riot Games acknowledges the blame
While compensation for victims is important, the point of these types of lawsuits is to prevent situations like this from happening again.
For this reason, it is striking that Riot Games recognized that it must be held accountable for its past actions. Also, the company notes that a lot has changed since the demand was registered in 2018.
“We hope this agreement adequately recognizes those who had negative experiences at Riot and demonstrates our desire to lead by example to bring more responsibility and equality to the gaming industry,” said Riot.
