Top Esports won their second consecutive Demacia Cup beating FunPlus Phoenix in the grand finale. The Chinese tournament of League of Legends ended this weekend after putting 17 LPL teams, 4 amateur teams and 3 LDL squads into action.

The road to the playoffs was straightforward for Top Esports, but their opponent in the grand finale proved tougher than the rest. Although TES lost the first couple of games in the series and FPX came close to claiming the trophy, the team managed to overcome the match 3 – 2 against the former world champions. The MVP of the series was the jungle Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang, who shone against his old team.

According to the regulations, the 4 LPL squads that represented China in Worlds 2021 received a direct pass to the quarterfinals. TES was not in that group, so they had to play from the group stage where they won against Team WE and secured their place in the playoffs.

In the quarterfinals, TES easily defeated Royal Never Give Up 3-0 and advanced to the semi-finals against 2018 world champions Invictus Gaming. This match ended with another 3 – 0 to reach the grand final.

The Demacia Cup is the last tournament of the year and the first of the new season. Fans generally see it in preparation for the spring split, to meet the title contenders.

The first Demacia Cup was held in 2013. Since then only a few organizations have taken the trophy home: world champion EDG won the majority, but TES took the crown in the last 2 years. Even if the team didn’t look so good during the last regular season, we can expect some surprises heading into the first split in 2022.
