Russia continues with a heavy hand on content on the Internet. After fining Netflix, a streaming company, the authorities of this country also went against Google for not deleting content that in this country they consider illegal.

As reported Engadget, Russia fined Google $ 98 million because it did not remove 2,600 pieces of content than in Russia illegal content. These are publications promoting the use of drugs or dangerous behavior, instructions to create explosives and weapons and content that they consider to be extremist or terrorist.

Like Netflix, Google was accused of breaking the 2013 law that prohibits “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” to persons under 18 years of age. It is a law that has been widely criticized in various parts of the world for discriminating against LGBTQ + people and for violating the right to free expression.

Google announced that it will review the legal documents related to this decision before acting. It is worth mentioning that the company has 10 days to appeal the court’s decision.

It is worth mentioning that the Russian government also fined Meta and Instagram for similar offenses. Mark Zuckerberg’s company must pay about $ 27.15 million for not removing 2,000 pieces of content that were banned by the government of this country.

With all of the above, it is clear that in Russia they are taking measures to have greater control over content on the Internet. Things seem to only get worse, as authorities are now requesting that online services have local servers in Russia. Could it be that the country will follow the same path as China? Only time will tell.
