Explanation of the ‘unsafe’ ending: Issa Rae jumps in time, okay?

Warning: this article continues with spoilers for the Unsafe end of the series.

It’s the end of an era for Issa Rae. After five seasons, the multi-scripted HBO hit drama Unsafe came to an end on Sunday, December 26. The series, which has been celebrated for its witty and evocative depictions of contemporary black femininity, ended on a bittersweet note. So how did Issa (Rae), Molly (Yvonne Orji), Kelli (Natasha Rothwell), Tiffany (Amanda Seales) and the rest of the Unsafe gang stories end? Let’s analyze everything:

The Unsafe The series finale picks up right where the last episode ended, after a tense confrontation between two of the men in Issa’s life: her ex-fiancé, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), and her current boyfriend, Nathan (Kendrick Sampson).

Suddenly, Issa’s seemingly perfect life is turned upside down as Nathan abandons her and worries that his bonds with his friends will change as they enter different stages of life. From there, the rest of the episode progresses to catch up with Unsafemain characters at a handful of birthday celebrations and a wedding.

Issa reconciles with Nathan and wonders if he will ever get dirty at his surprise birthday party, and considers reconnecting with Lawrence at his birthday. Along the way, a host of other life changes occur: Tiffany sympathizes with her friends for the horrors of living in Denver, Kelli decides to have a baby, and Molly’s mother tragically passes away.

After Molly’s birthday party next year, Lawrence greets Issa in his company office and congratulates her on how far she’s come. And yes, Issa and Lawrence’s transporters will be happy, because they / no, the tension finally comes to an end. With a kiss, they are officially reunited as a couple.

Months later, the gang got together again to celebrate Molly’s wedding to Taurean (Leonard Robinson), but the highlight is Issa and Molly’s candid conversation at the end of the night. “As long as you’re around, I’ll be fine,” Molly tells her best friend, reaffirming their relationship as the show’s main love story.

Unsafe It’s Issa’s story, so the show couldn’t end without catching up with her for one last birthday. At some point later, she oversees the Blocc in a fabulous red suit, before heading back to her new home with her fiancé (yes, again) Lawrence and their son. Molly calls from her honeymoon in Greece, and the two friends remember where they ended up before Issa, laughing, joins Lawrence inside. And there you have it! Isure It may be over, but Rae’s Hollywood legacy is just beginning.
