Windows 10’s Big Update Just Made Work From Home Better – Here’s How

The next big update to Windows 10 will implement performance improvements that will support remote working and security.

Microsoft officially confirmed that the Windows 10 update, version 21H1, will arrive this spring in a blog post. The company traditionally releases two major Windows updates per year. Issue 21H1 follows an October 2020 update and precedes a major revision of the software, codenamed “Sun Valley,” coming this fall.

Starting today, Microsoft will make 21H1 available to beta testers at the Windows Insiders Program. It will then be released to all Windows 10 users “later in the first half of this calendar year,” sometime in April or May.

“Windows 10, version 21H1 will have a set of specific features that improve security, remote access and quality,” said John Cable, director of Windows Service and Delivery at Microsoft. “The features we released in this update focus on core experiences that customers have told us they trust the most right now.”

Cable also explained that version 21H1 will be delivered using Microsoft’s service technology, as well as monthly updates and the October 2020 update. That means installation should be done quickly and smoothly.

What’s in Windows 10 version 21H1?

Microsoft highlighted three main features in the upcoming Windows 10 update.

  • Support for multiple Windows Hello cameras to set the default as external camera when both internal and external Windows Hello cameras are present.
  • Windows Defender Application Guard performance improvements, including optimization of document open scenario times.
  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Group Policy Service (GPSVC) updating performance improvement to support remote work scenarios.

The first new feature in Windows 10 is designed to allow users to connect an external camera and set it as the default on a laptop that already has a built-in internal camera. The last two items are intended to improve security and support for remote work.

Windows 10 version 21H1 represents the smaller of Microsoft’s two updates this year. Rumor has it that what’s expected in the fall, codenamed “Sun Valley,” will be a complete overhaul of the desktop interface, with new looks for the Start Menu, Action Center, File Explorer, and Toolbar. of homework.
