More than 2 decades have passed since the premiere of the first movie of The Matrix, in 1999, and although subsequent films have divided opinions, the franchise continues and Keanu Reeves continues to delight us with Neo’s action sequences. Of course, in all these years things have changed a lot, and current trends are on the side of video games, a detail that was not overlooked by production.
The Matrix and video games closer than ever
In case you don’t know, in the most recent movie of the saga, The Matrix Resurrections, Thomas Anderson introduces himself as a video game developer of a successful franchise, all this before this alternate and digital world that controls everything catches him again. Well, the production team not only recognized the success of gaming by giving this introduction to the story, but they also hid an Easter egg that was captured by Ed Boon, responsible for Mortal Kombat.
The developer shared on his Twitter account the easter egg that the production of The Matrix Resurrections dedicated to video games, especially The Game Awards, because on Anderson’s desk is the 1999 Game of the Year award, the GOTY, and this was won by the video game The Matrix, developed by the Deus Machina studio.
I’m guessing @geoffkeighley got (or will get) a kick out of seeing this in the new MATRIX movie…

The nod to The Game Awards confirms the closeness that the production team had with Geoff Keighley, producer of the event, because when the 2021 edition took place we were a few days away from the premiere of The Matrix Resurrections and during the evening Keanu Reeves gave the presentation to The Matrix Awakens, an experience made in Unreal Engine 5 that can be enjoyed on next-generation consoles, such as PS5 and Xbox Series X | S.
