2021 is almost over and there’s no question that it had a ton of great new releases. For this reason it is incredible that only 4 releases from 2021 are among the top 10 rated games of all of 2021.
What happens is that Metacritic has a list where it orders the highest rated games of 2021 in an easy to consult list. There we can see that it is a selection of games mainly made up of games that originally debuted in previous years. In other words: the best games of 2021 were ports of games already available or re-releases.
The only 2021 debuts to appear in the top 10 of the year are Forza Horizon 5, the Endwalker expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, Psychonauts 2 and the acclaimed indie Chicory: A Colorful Tale. All the others are re-releases on different consoles or with additional content.

Metacritic does not rate games
Without a doubt it is a list that attracts a lot of attention. Especially since almost all the candidates for Game of the Year 2021 are missing from The Game Awards and it is It Takes Two, award winner. It is also very striking that jewelry like Tales of Arise, Death’s Door Y Halo Infinite are so far from the top.
It is worth reminding you that Metacritic does not put these ratings. The site is dedicated to compiling reviews of records, video games, movies, television shows and books from different media. Thus, the Metacritic score is an average of the reviews received.
