Goldbergs’ Jeff Garlin exits show after investigation

Comedian Jeff Garlin, who plays the Murray family patriarch on The Goldberg, exits the ABC series in season 9 following an HR investigation.

Jeff Garlin sale The Goldbergs after an HR investigation into his initial behavior. Garlin has been a regular on ABC sitcom since it premiered in 2013. He plays the patriarch of the Murray family alongside Wendi McLendon-Covey’s Beverly. Hayley Orrantia, Troy Gentile and Sean Giambrone co-star as the children of Murray and Beverly. The ’80s show, which is currently in the middle of season 9, has been a hit with critics. Go Goldberg also inspired the spinoff series Educated, although it was canceled after two seasons last year.

In spite of Go Goldberg Success, Garlin’s behavior has overshadowed the show, especially recently. In early December 2021, Garlin spoke with Vanity fair on the subject, admitting that he has been the subject of a human resources investigation for the past three years. In the interview, he defended that some of his colleagues on set were uncomfortable with his behavior, with the excuse that he is a comedian. At the time, Garlin also maintained that he had not been fired from Go Goldberg. However, it now appears that his time with the show has come to an end.

For THR, Garlin has come out Go Goldberg in what is called a mutual decision between actor and producer Sony. The actor has finished filming as of now, which means that Murray will only appear for part of season 9. It remains to be seen how the character’s sudden disappearance will be addressed.

According to THRGarlin’s sources, it was unlikely that Garlin was part of Go Goldberg season 10, if it comes to fruition. With this in mind, those behind the show may have already thought about how to write Murray. It is possible that they kill him, similar to how Los Conners handled Roseanne Barr’s behavior off-screen. ABC may also decide that it is best to cancel the series after season 9. This would make it easier for the writers to explain Murray’s absence, as it would only be for a short period of time. It could also help them avoid killing the character.

Sadly, Garlin is one of countless figures in the entertainment industry whose inappropriate behavior has been exposed in recent years. Although Garlin was quite unique in agreeing to participate in an interview about the allegations against him, he does not excuse the behavior that made his colleagues uncomfortable on the set of Go Goldberg. Hopefully, the show can get on without Garlin and spend more time with the rest of its talented cast.
