The advent of sound bars has been one of the most important developments in sound systems in the last decade. Aptly named, these speaker systems consist of a single piece of equipment that is used to deliver atmospheric sounds without the need for an additional set of speakers or woofers.
Soundbar speakers can have problems, just like any other piece of hardware. You can solve minor problems with a simple reboot, but serious problems may require a factory reset. Let’s see how to perform a factory reset on a Sonos soundbar.
The arrival of Sonos
While there were already a variety of companies offering high-end speaker systems, the first 21S tThe arrival of the 20th century Sonos altered the soundscape in more ways than one. Designed as smart speakers that can work with a wide range of devices, Sonos speakers quickly rose to fame.
Nearly two decades later, Sonos soundbars – or Playbars as they are called – have given established giants like Bose and JBL a run for their money. Sonos’ ability to pair with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri-enabled devices is its biggest advantage in the world of smart speakers.
Some additional features
It’s easy to install a Sonos soundbar. Depending on how you plan to use your new speaker system, you can set it up within a couple of minutes after unpacking it.
Sonos sound bars can detect the type of sound you need remotely. Sonos AI is known for the ease with which it can adapt to user demands.
What’s even more interesting are the additional features like the Speech Enhancement app, which Sonos launched. Using the app via your mobile device, you can set the speaker so that whispered dialogue in a movie is as clear to the ear as the screams in the lungs.
But i’m having trouble
Note that Sonos advises that resetting your device will erase everything and therefore a factory reset is not recommended for basic troubleshooting.
Although rare, there are times when you may run into trouble with a Sonos soundbar when trying to reconfigure it. For example, if you’ve been using a Sonos Playbar with your TV, but now you want to take it outside and connect to a Bluetooth device, there is a small chance that Sonos will have trouble reconfiguring itself.
There are other times when your Sonos Playbar may not connect to your Wi-Fi network or not sync with Alexa or Siri. The Sonos speaker may not be able to play music without skipping. Such issues can be attributed to other issues such as interference, but if you’ve exhausted all options in trying to repair your Sonos, there is still a way out.
However, it is easy to get out of that situation. You can both soft and hard reset the Sonos playbar. We recommend that you restart your Sonos speaker if you have a problem. If a reset doesn’t help, you may want to perform a factory reset.
We’ll tell you how to factory reset your Sonos soundbar in the next section. But remember that hard resetting your Sonos speaker will delete all the data stored on it. Once the factory reset is done, you can register the Sonos Playbar to a new email address. Therefore, if you plan to give your Sonos Playbar to someone else, you will need to perform a full factory reset before giving it away.
Before factory reset
As mentioned above, Sonos recommends other steps before proceeding with a factory reset. It is for this reason that we wanted to walk you through the basic troubleshooting options that can save you headaches later on. However, if you are doing a factory reset because you want to sell or give away your Sonos Playbar, feel free to skip this section.
The company lists four main reasons why you are having problems:
- Connection problems
- The WiFi network is not up to date
- Sonos device not found during setup
- A missing product in the application.

Most of your problems are easily solved by turning your device off and on again. But, if you have a connection problem, you may want to reset your router or turn off your VPN. Sonos Soundbar will not always cooperate with a VPN.
The factory reset process
Follow the steps below to factory reset your Sonos Playbar.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall.
- Then press and hold the Play / Pause button. While holding down the button, reconnect the power cord to the wall.
- Continue pressing the Play / Pause button until the light begins to blink amber and white.
- Continue pressing the button. Once the light on the play bar starts flashing green, you know that your speaker has successfully rebooted.
Your Sonos Playbar has been factory reset. All your data and connections are lost, but the device is like new. You may want to perform a hard reset on your Sonos speaker if someone else is going to use it for the long term.
