This afternoon, Ibai Llanos and Gerard Piqué officially presented their new esports team. The organization will be called KOI in honor of the Japanese carp, and fans received it with great fanfare. The presentation took place at the Sant Jordi Palace in Barcelona, in front of fully packed stands, and was also broadcast live with more than 200,000 concurrent viewers on Twitch.

According to Japanese legend, Koi fish are capable of turning into dragons if they fight against the current and manage to scale a waterfall. That is exactly what Ibai and Piqué intend to do in the professional scene of League of Legends.

The team will compete in the Super League with a group of players who have been successful in the regional leagues in Europe, but have so far kept a relatively low profile. They are:

  • Enzo “SLT” González
  • Luis “Koldo” Pérez
  • Jørgen “Hatrixx” Elgåen
  • Rafa “Rafitta” Ayllón
  • Daniel “Seaz” Binderhofer

Meanwhile, the coaching staff will be made up of coaches Jesús “Falco” Pérez and Tiago “Aziado” Rodriguez.

During the presentation, Piqué said that he had many proposals with many names, but in the end they chose KOI because it is an easy name to pronounce in all languages. “We know that it will be very successful and we will fight to lift all the titles,” said the footballer.

KOI also revealed that finetwork, Disney + and Cupra are among its sponsors. In fact, his house will be called the Disney + Gaming House and all the players will live there.

As of this writing, KOI is making its debut in a friendly match against French organization Karmine Corp. We’ll see how far Ibai and Piqué’s tent will go in the coming months.
