We haven’t even seen El batman still, but Warner Bros. is already clamoring for more of Colin Farrell as The Penguin. The actor has signed on to star in and executive produce a series derived from El batman, playing the title role in an HBO Max spin-off, Variety reports.
Farrell’s debut in the role will be in El batman, in which he will play the villain alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman. The film will be released on March 4, 2022, and the streaming series will debut some time later. The untitled show will reportedly delve into The Penguin’s rise to power in the criminal underworld. The series was reported in September, although Farrell had yet to be attached at the time.
Lauren LeFranc has been chosen to write the script. Executive producers include Farrell, El batman director Matt Reeves and producer Dylan Clark. Warner Bros. Television will also produce.
On the television side, Farrell recently starred in the AMC + drama. Northern water y HBO’s Real detective. He recently finished filming in Las Banshees de Inisherin, marking a reunion with In witches director Martin McDonough and his co-star Brendan Gleeson.
The penguin, also known as Oswald Cobblepot, is a member of the Batman Rogues gallery, recognizable by his top hat, monocle, and assortment of ever-present killer umbrellas. The character has previously been portrayed by actors such as Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, and Robin Lord Taylor.
The Penguin-centric series marks the second spin-off of El batman ordered by HBO Max. The streamer has already created a drama about the Gotham Police Department, which has attached Joe Barton as showrunner. With Untitled Penguin Derivative Series (not the name of the show), there are a number of other DC live action shows in the works on HBO Max, such as Pacifier with John Cena, Greg Berlanti Green Lantern series, as well as a Dark justice league series by JJ Abrams.
