About a month ago I wrote an article exploring how several of the best VPN services had been affected by Netflix’s new blocking techniques. Let’s say the results weren’t stellar.
Now that the dust has settled and the vendors have had time to develop their solutions, I thought I’d see how they have improved, if at all.
I tested the paid versions of ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Hotspot Shield, CyberGhost, IPVanish, VyprVPN, and ProtonVPN in five different locations, and during each test for each location I changed the individual Netflix VPN server multiple times.
It is worth noting that during these tests I used the regional server selected automatically to reflect the average user, although if I had problems, I would manually select another.
So if you’re wondering if ExpressVPN can still unblock Netflix shows in the US only or if NordVPN can give you access to The Office on Netflix UK, just check the relevant sections below for detailed results, or check the table for get quick information. info.
NB: While I am sure these tests are correct at time of publishing, please note that we are seeing a lot of changes quite quickly in this area. However, all of the providers I’ve tried offer at least a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can make sure you can unlock what you want before you commit.
- Plus: Roku Streaming Stick 4K just replaced the best streaming device
- Is OpenVPN still fit for purpose?
- Always buffering? Maybe you need the fastest VPN
Which VPNs work with Netflix at a glance
1. Netflix de EE. UU.
Probably the most popular location for those looking to evade geo-blocks, US Netflix is home to a host of shows and movies that aren’t available anywhere else, like Radium Girls, Rain Man, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
Because of that, it’s usually pretty easy to access when using a US VPN, but it was by no means a clean sweep in my tests.
NordVPN, ProtonVPN, CyberGhost, and Hotspot Shield impressed me and unblocked Netflix on every server I tried.
About a week ago I had some issues with ExpressVPN and US Netflix, but after a quick chat with a customer support agent, I was informed that the Los Angeles – 3 the server should be working. Fortunately he did and I was able to see exactly what he wanted.
Surfshark had some issues with US Netflix as well, and while I was able to unblock content, it was only 30% effective. Finally, VyprVPN and IPVanish were unable to unblock US Netflix and spoiler alert, they were unable to unblock other countries either. That’s the last you’ll hear from them in this article.
2. UK Netflix
Thanks to the proliferation of streaming services in the US, Tons of very popular titles like the aforementioned The Office have moved to other sites, but in the UK, many of these are still available on Netflix. So it is definitely worth having a UK VPN that you can access if you are in the US.
ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, and ProtonVPN had no problems accessing UK content. So if you want to watch It’s Always Sunny, American Graffiti, or even Green Street (don’t judge me) on Netflix, one of these providers is a safe bet.
Hotspot Shield was not a total failure, but in this round of testing it only had a 30% success rate when accessing UK content. Unfortunately, despite having a dedicated streaming server, CyberGhost was unable to gain access at all in my testing.
3. Netflix canadiense
While it’s perhaps not as widely used as the UK or US, Canadian Netflix has a remarkably good selection of content that isn’t available elsewhere. However, many VPN providers seem to neglect location, and this was true even before Netflix’s hardened blocking came into play.
In my testing, only ExpressVPN was able to crack the Canadian library on every attempt, which is an impressive result. However, on some occasions Netflix loaded at a snail’s pace, not reflected in the general navigation when using the same server, so while it is effective, you will need to have a little patience.
NordVPN was successful about 50% of the time and Surfshark about 30%. If you are a Surfshark user looking to unblock Canada, I suggest you try the Toronto server first, it’s the only one that worked for me.
Canada is where ProtonVPN’s hit streak ended. While it is disappointing that it was unable to complete a clean sweep, its excellent performance in the US and UK shows that the supplier is committed to improving its game in this department. Until recently, Proton wasn’t even a competitor as a streaming VPN, so I’m eager to see if it continues to improve its game.
4. Netflix australiano
We’re getting a bit more specific now, but I think it’s important to check more than just the most popular locations. Also, Aussie Netflix has a number of classic movies like The Big Lebowski and Airplane, so they are worth accessing.
Unfortunately, Down Under doesn’t seem to have been a priority for VPN providers, and none of the tested VPNs were able to unblock it 100% of the time.
As with US Netflix, several Australian ExpressVPN servers were unable to access Australian content, but after speaking with the support team I was informed that Sydney – 2 it would give me access. Lo and behold, he did, and this shows just how helpful a responsive customer support team is.
NordVPN performed well too, with every server tested getting access to the library. However, in one case, playback was blocked because a VPN was detected. Surfshark again offered a success rate of about 30%, which can be used in a pinch, but it’s not the effortless experience I’ve grown used to with the excellent cheap VPN.
5. Japanese Netflix
Again, it’s a niche library, but for those traveling outside of Japan or wanting to watch some animes that aren’t available anywhere else, having access to Japanese Netflix could be a deal breaker.
Perhaps reflecting that lack of demand, I discovered that it was the most difficult place to access. Of all the providers I tried, only NordVPN was able to unblock Netflix Japan, and even then, only at any other time. ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and the rest were unable to access exclusive content.
Which VPN is Best for Netflix Right Now?
With the server information I received from the support agents combined with my own testing, I would say that ExpressVPN has the upper hand over NordVPN, but it is a very close fight.
That boils down to the fact that although Nord can access most things after several tries, knowing the correct ExpressVPN servers allows for smooth streaming in more locations. If I didn’t have that information, I would come to a different conclusion.
Surfshark ranks third, but the big surprise is ProtonVPN. While not leading in its class, it is quietly improving its game and may well be a supplier to keep an eye on in the future.
So if you’re not looking for Japanese exclusives, I would recommend ExpressVPN, and if you are, NordVPN is the sensible option. But right now, anything could happen. However, the main takeaway? Use your VPN’s support network if you can; It can really save you a lot of trial and error.
What ExpressVPN servers work for US Netflix?
At the time of publication, you must use Los Angeles – 3 to access US Netflix from outside the United States. If that doesn’t work, contact the support team and see if they have up-to-the-minute information.
