Developer Eidos-Montreal explains the origins of some of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy costumes, many of which have roots in the comics.
From Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Unlockable, comic book-inspired outfits have become a favorite with some players since launch, and developer Edios-Montreal has gone behind the scenes to explain how the game’s comic book skins were created. There are more than 40 Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy outfits in total, and many of the free unlockable cosmetics have their roots in the Marvel Comics early days of the franchise.
Having been released in October to critical acclaim and high user ratings on Metacritic and Steam, Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy capitalized on the interest of superhero games in a way that the less successful multiplayer live service title from publisher Square Enix Marvel avengers he did not do it the year before. The reason for this is widely assumed to be related to Guardians of the Galaxy Different genre approach as it is an action game based strictly on a single player story. The Eidos-Montreal version of Marvel’s heroes has contrasted favorably with the microtransactions and online multiplayer approach of Marvel avengers, and it seems likely that GotG the game has for now avoided the sales shortfall of its predecessor. Post-launch support for the offline title has already started, as a recent Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Update added ray tracing support for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and chapter resets for all platforms.
As well as showcasing the developers’ concept art for Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Wearing the Golden Guardian outfits, Eidos-Montreal shared an interesting look at how the studio decided what comic book style the Game-tailored Guardians would sport. Calling the Guardians of the Galaxy The 2008 comic was a major source of inspiration for the video game, community manager Sacha Ramtohul explains that Star-Lord’s Team-Lord outfit was chosen specifically for his eye-catching helmet. Meanwhile, the unique adaptation of Gamora’s Black Vortex outfit made the cut thanks to her «Awesome“layer of Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men: Black Vortex Alpha # 1.
One of Drax’s most unique looks is the Katathian Monk outfit, and Ramtohul says he was chosen for Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy for how he represents Drax’s humorous and serious side as a character, a balance that is maintained throughout the campaign. In an homage to character co-creator Bill Mantlo, Rocket Raccoon’s Hero of Halfworld outfit is a throwback to Rocket Raccoon # 1 since 1985, and scoffs that more references to Mantlo can be found elsewhere. Finally, a Guardians of the Galaxy The variant cover inspired the game’s Horsemen of the Apocalypse set of black and red outfits, which arguably looks more eye-catching on Groot.
Comparing the comic book origins of each outfit and seeing how they look in-game is a fascinating case study of how Eidos-Montreal took many classic inspirations from the page and into the 3D realm. Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy‘s The final setup for the sequel likely means that the developer will have many more opportunities to explore the characters’ long pre-MCU history in a future game, but the studio doesn’t appear ready to release what a potential next entry might bring.
