In a new interview, J. Jonah Jameson actor JK Simmons reveals that he originally thought he was going to play a villain in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.

J. Jonah Jameson Actor JK Simmons Says When He First Heard About Sam Raimi Spiderman movie, people thought he should play the villain. Released in 2002, Raimi Spiderman, starring Tobey Maguire, remains a fan favorite. The film introduced audiences to a number of iconic comic book characters, including Daily Bugle editor and publisher J. Jonah Jameson.

Simmons was loved by fans for his cheeky, fast-paced, and fun approach to playing Jameson, which often felt straight out of a comic. The character was absent from the Andrew Garfield era of Spiderman (although he was referenced), but he made a surprise return at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home as the newscaster who shares Spider-Man’s true identity with the world. This new Jameson no longer sports his iconic flat haircut, but he still has his mustache and the same attitude from the Raimi movies.

Speaking in an episode of the Happy, sad and confused podcast, Simmons reflects on how he first learned about the Spiderman movie and that the reaction of most people was that he should play the main villain of the movie. Word that Raimi would be leading a Spiderman The film began to circulate during the production of another Raimi film, The gift, in which Simmons also appeared. During those early days, Simmons says, the feeling was that he should play the Vulture, or the main villain who was going to appear in the movie. Check out Simmons’ full comment below:

“It was during [production on The Gift] Word got out among the people who really pay attention that Sam was going to direct Spider-Man. And my friends would call me saying, “Oh, you have to play…” Most of them thought I should play, I think, the Vulture, or whoever the bad guy was because nobody knew. “

In the end, as Simmons explains, Raimi called him up and asked him to audition for the role of J. Jonah Jameson, and the rest is history. Simmons’ comments suggest that things were still in early development when he first heard about the movie, and it may not have been decided that Green Goblin was going to be the villain. In fact, although the Vulture never appeared in any of the Raimi Spiderman movies, it was considered for the third movie at one point and even included in a treatment of Raimi’s own story before the idea was finally scrapped.
