Good Old Games, the digital PC store of CD Projekt (the parent company of CD Projekt Red, the studio responsible for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt), return to its origins after a year of losses. In the words of Piotr Nielubowicz, Chief Financial Officer of the company, this implies an internal reorganization of the team dedicated to GOG with the aim that the store focus on hand-selected games without DRM.
GOG.com carries a prdidas as of the third fiscal quarter of CD Projekt (that is, as of September 30, 2021) of $ 2.21 million. In the same period of last year they had obtained an income of 1.37 million dollars. “About GOG, its performance presents a challenge and recently we have taken steps to improve its financial situation,” said Nielubowicz in the presentation of financial results, collected from VGC.
“First of all, we have decided that GOG should focus more on its nuclear business activity, which means offering a selection of hand-picked games with their unique DRM-free philosophy. In line with this approach, there will be changes in the structure of the team, “said the CFO. The company in 2019 made a strong commitment to GOG Galaxy 2.0, an initiator whose ambition is to bring together all the players’ digital libraries in a single program.
GOG has continued from its beginnings in 2008 releasing classic games and recent titles from independent DRM-free studios. In the last couple of months, such iconic games as Outcast and Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain exclusively at that store. However, they have also had controversial releases such as that of Hitman, which was withdrawn from sale for requiring permanent connection to the network for certain modes.
Another internal change that GOG will have is the departure of that portion of the company from the “Gwent consortium”, a project of the Polish company based on the card game of The Witcher with different departments. Nielubowicz explains that, therefore, the GOG division will not reflect either the expenses or the profits associated with that project going forward.
