Babylon’s Fall will feature Final Fantasy XIV gear and emotes

The visual design of the upcoming co-op fighter, Babylon’s Fall, has been generating conversation for a number of reasons, with the impractical oil paint filter being the biggest point of criticism. That aspect has already been directed to some extent, although the game is still very different in its aesthetics. And yet many players who participated in Babylon’s Fall’s closed playtest have noticed something strangely familiar about their characters’ appearance – some of them appear to be wearing sets of armor from Final Fantasy.

a Official statement Square Enix, publisher of Babylon’s Fall, confirms this is intentional. During the early stages of development for Babylon’s Fall, the game caught the attention of Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida. He wanted to enrich the set of equipment in the new game with as many options as possible, because in his words, “a game of hack and slash is much more fun when there are numerous items and equipment available.” Many assets were then moved from Final Fantasy XIV to Babylon’s Fall after undergoing visual changes to better fit the world of the new Plarium game.

Final Fantasy XIV assets will remain in Babylon’s Fall when it is officially released. As of now, there is no narrative connection between the two games, so this asset swap is simply a bit of game development trivia that Square Enix fans will appreciate.
