Amazon Smart Thermostat Review

Amazon’s affordable smart thermostat might not be as fancy as all best smart thermostats, but you get an extra credit on intuition. Lacking a built-in speaker and remote sensing support, this thermostat prioritizes adaptation to your routine.

Alexa’s hunches could already guess when to turn off the smart lights. Now the feature extends intelligence similar to Amazon’s smart thermostat temperature controls through “automatic actions,” which make changes when Alexa has a feeling that everyone in her house has gone to bed or no one is there. at home. This automation is limiting for those who apparently enjoy granular control over the thermostat. I’m talking to you, dad. However, for a first time smart thermostat user, a lot of pressure is removed to create a comfortable indoor climate.

Read this full Amazon smart thermostat review to see everything else you get (or don’t get) for $ 59, compared to Nest and Ecobee smart thermostats that cost much, much more.

Amazon Smart Thermostat Price and Availability

Amazon’s Smart Thermostat is available now and costs $ 59.99. If your current thermostat wiring does not include a C wire, which powers a thermostat without the need for a built-in battery, Amazon includes a Honeywell Home adapter for $ 74.99. Click here to check compatibility before purchasing.

Amazon Smart Thermostat Review: Design

The design of Amazon’s Smart Thermostat is attractive because it’s simple – it’s a 3.5 x 3.5 rounded square, similar to the Ecobee Smart Thermostat. Amazon said it partnered with Resideo (Honeywell Home) to design the device, although it is even more subtle than the Honeywell Home T9 Smart Thermostat. The LED face only appears when the device is powered on.

Amazon’s Smart Thermostat displays the temperature in a large digital clock-style font. Below the temperature there are little up and down arrows to adjust the weather one degree at a time. Between the arrows is a circle to turn the thermostat on and off or change modes (heat, cool, fan, and auto). Using only touch controls, we would worry about unsightly fingerprints, but the white color of the device hides smudges well.

Meanwhile, an included faceplate will cover any marks or holes surrounding the thermostat. Nest charges $ 15 for a faceplate, proving that Amazon’s low price for the smart thermostat doesn’t come at the expense of aesthetics.

Amazon Smart Thermostat Review: Features and Smart Home Compatibility

There are no physical tricks when it comes to Amazon’s smart thermostat, just like the $ 129 Termostato Nest. Unlike Nest Learning Thermostat, The Amazon thermostat does not offer proximity-based motion activation or separate temperature sensors to better match your home’s climate needs. You can have multiple thermostats for different zones, but they can’t be set separately, which is weird. When you know how to create an Alexa smart home routine and have a speaker with a temperature sensor such as the Amazon Echo (4th generation), you can technically set some actions based on temperature. But this solution is too annoying for the average user, in my opinion.

Instead, the intelligence of Amazon’s smart thermostat comes through Alexa Hunches. While it doesn’t have Alexa built in like the Ecobee SmartThermostat, the virtual assistant is at the center of the experience. Based on how you interact with the best Alexa-compatible devices in your home, Alexa makes guesses about your whereabouts. Once you set your preferred temperatures, your assistant knows when to tell Amazon’s smart thermostat to make changes – at least it tries.

Amazon’s smart thermostat changed when everyone in my house fell asleep, raising the temperature slightly to accommodate the nighttime chill. I found the least accurate hunches to recognize when we were not home for a few hours, perhaps due to my dog. Either way, I accept the intuition. If you are against the thermostat adjusting without your knowledge, you can disable the automatic actions. You can also have notifications sent to your phone for ‘Away’ hunches, if you like some automation but still want to stay on top of it.

For any setting in the moment, you can ask Alexa through any of the best Alexa speakers to make the change. The Alexa app also acts as a controller, allowing you to set a specific temperature, assign more regular hours, and view your energy consumption dashboard.

And if you’re wondering why I haven’t mentioned the additional smart home compatibility yet, it’s because Amazon’s smart thermostat only works with Alexa. Google-owned Nest thermostats work with Alexa in addition to the Google Assistant, while the Ecobee SmartThermostat even includes support for Siri. If you are an Alexa home, this will not be a problem, but you should consider the uniqueness of the thermostat.

Amazon Smart Thermostat Review: Verdict

Amazon’s smart thermostat value makes it easy to recommend. For $ 59, jumping on the smart thermostat train isn’t more affordable. You can even use it as a “dumb” thermostat with manual touch controls, but knowing how to use Alexa allows for intuitive automations and extensive hands-free settings.

I never thought my thermostat needed a microphone or speaker; Enough of the best smart home devices already have Alexa built in, so you wouldn’t count it with Amazon’s smart thermostat. However, I wish it offered remote sensor support. I would probably recommend the Ecobee SmartThermostat or Nest Learning Thermostat v3 to anyone else in a larger space with noticeable temperature discrepancies, but both thermostats are significantly more expensive.

Even Nest’s budget model is more than twice the price of this one from Amazon, and they both serve pretty much the same purpose. Amazon’s smart thermostat is the clear winner in terms of value.
