Adobe Photoshop Elements 2019 Review: A Very Helpful Update

Adobe Photoshop Elements is the go-to app for busy amateur shooters who are determined to bring family memories to life in unique and artistic ways. Adobe increasingly relies on Sensei, its artificial intelligence engine, for updates to features already present in previous versions of the photo editing application, as well as completely new innovations.

In this version of Elements, a new home screen, which houses the new automatic creation feature, accompanies the new simplified templates for photo and video collages. The app also adds support for HEIF (High Efficiency Image File) for the highly compressed mobile image format that Apple now uses on newer iPhones and iPads. And, for the first time in recent memory, there are no identifiable new features for Organizer, Elements’ companion asset management application.

Price

Photoshop Elements 2019 costs $ 99.99; you can upgrade from a previous version for $ 79.99 (£ 86.56 for the full version; £ 70.91 for the upgrade). Buy Photoshop Elements alongside Adobe Premiere Elements, which has also been updated, and you’ll pay $ 149.99 or $ 119.99 for the included update (£ 130.36; £ 107.41).

Starting screen

Photoshop Elements 2019 features a radically revised home screen: light-toned with no top tabs. If you park at least one folder of images in the Elements Organizer helper app, which ships free with Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, the home screen will scan it to automatically generate and launch unique photo and video collages or slide shows.

The Organizer is not getting any new identifiable features in Photoshop Elements 2019.

Although Elements is a perpetual licensed consumer app, you must still create and sign in to an Adobe account to start using the software.

You can also create collages manually or edit automatically generated ones, but with Elements 2019, Adobe chooses which photos and videos to use through its Sensei artificial intelligence engine. Artificial intelligence is, by definition, artificial, and I’m hardly ever satisfied with Adobe Sensei’s selection of favorite photos to include. Still, the feature is useful to get started, and the results are easy to tweak by swapping alternate photos in and out of the collage or changing the number of images. The best case scenario is that users love automatic creations and use them as is.

The new home screen anchors the Elements experience.

The home screen also shows all the new features in Photoshop Elements and lets you navigate directly to more information about them, while a search box lets you find the feature you’re looking for.

Guided editions

At the heart of Photoshop Elements are the program’s Guided Edits, an interactive signature tutorial feature, allowing you to work directly on your chosen photo through a step-by-step guide. Photoshop Elements now has dozens of Guided Edits, including four new with this release.

Cramming the letters in images is a huge consumer favorite.

Text from multiple photos: This is an easy way to save photos within the screen type. Previous versions of Elements allowed a single image to inhabit ornamental letters, but in this version, instead of transforming an image into letters, place the text on a white or colored background or a background image and fill each letter with different images. You can change the background color or make it transparent, or you can enlarge and move individual letters or use a different photo as the background.

Meme creator: This new Guided Edit is incredibly easy, unlike other meme-based Guided Edits in recent years that involved numerous steps. Here, simply choose an image, select a background, and write your phrase. There are some fancy background options, though not quite enough, and you can also add a solid color frame of any shade if you like. And there are some restrictions on the special effects you can add – you can convert the original image to black and white or sepia or turn part of the photo into a drawing, but that’s it. The meme maker is a quick and dirty way to get your post running fast, and that suits me very well.

Partial sketch: This operation allows you to produce mixed media creations from your photos by converting parts of the image to line drawings and leaving the rest as a photographic image. You have four options: pencil drawing, colored pencil drawing, old photo, and old paper. A quick selector lets you choose where to apply the effect. You can choose only one effect at a time, so there is no mixing or overlapping of effects. But you can experiment with which ones look best with your image or reverse the effect before saving. It would be great to be able to mix more than one effect in an image.

Text and border overlay: This is an attractive feature that you can use to annotate a single shot. It looks a bit like the overlay style guided edits above in that it makes it easy to embellish, in this case various border and text options, without obscuring the photo. Although you can resize the border and text to a different color, the border cannot be moved anywhere in the image you want; remains aligned with the edge.

You can use any font on your system to add text to the design, choose from several built-in styles, and make both the border and the text the color you want. You need to be careful when selecting the default text: the items will not allow you to group select and replace the default letters, but you must remove or replace at least one letter before you can replace the group text. Then you can place the text block in the four corners or in the middle of the image.

Adding text is a one-time deal. If you change your mind about the text after it has been saved, you will have to start over. It would be nice if undo worked in this context, but it’s not that important.

Collages and slideshows with AI

When you start Elements, the application sorts all the images and videos in the Organizer to automatically generate slide shows and collages. From there, you can launch the collage maker to see a variety of new templates to choose from. The collage feature was fairly easy to use in the previous version of Elements, but it has been simplified even more in the 2019 edition, with the help of a boost in automation.

New templates make collages beautiful and easy to create.

You can add or remove images from the collage, with the template builder automatically adjusting the number of cells you want in your creation. In addition to the portrait and landscape templates, specific styles for Facebook and Instagram are also included.

The home page also features several automatically generated slide shows. Instead of opening in the Elements interface, the slideshow switches to the Organizer interface, where you can edit, swap images, add captions, and change the musical score of the built-in Adobe music samples.

Bottom line

Adobe maintains an aggressive update program for Photoshop Elements that manages to keep the application up to date. While the 2019 version is a pretty slim update when it comes to new features (Organizer has no obvious new features at all), existing and new users alike will find something to grab them. Automatic collages and slide shows will help busy workers decide what to post on social media, while maintaining the ability to modify at will.

Unless you can’t live without the new Guided Edits or easy collage feature, users with newer versions will miss little by skipping this update. New buyers, or those with older versions, would benefit greatly.
