There is no question that 343 Industries is a talented studio, but neither is there when we acknowledge that they made mistakes that caused them to Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians They will leave much to be desired. Fortunately, the studio learned from that process to create Halo Infinite.
Recently at LEVEL UP we were present at a press event with members of 343 Industries. There we asked them about the receipt of past deliveries from Halo and what did they learn from that process.
According to Justin Dinges, art manager, Halo 4 and Halo 5 they are deliveries with which they tried “different things” that they felt were good directions for the franchise. Unfortunately things did not go as expected, although that is normal in different creative processes.

That said, the creative process of those games left him a valuable lesson for Halo Infinite– Listen to the fans and see what is important to them.
“We had to investigate what things made sense for the franchise. So we implement that, or we start talking about it right away. I’m going to use art as an example: we kind of got more detailed for better and worse, as we went from Halo 4 a Halo 5, at times it was a matter of pride. Artists would like to do their best work. And I think we lost sight of what the visual identity that Halo had had. Part of the visual identity is based on the technical limitations of its origins. We have very talented art directors who took a look back and focused on what it is and what it does to Halo. Then the art team spent the last years working on taking these lessons and turning them into current and next generation visuals, ”he explained.

A group of fans helped in Halo Infinite
The fans were very important to the development of Halo Infinite. Not only because 343 Industries listened to the feedback they received from Halo 4 y Halo 5 Guardians, but there was also a council that actively assisted during the development of this project.
Paul Crocker, Associate Creative Director at 343 Industries, told us that “hardcore fans” were recruited to hear about what they were doing with Halo Infinite and they shared his opinion.
“I remember standing a few years ago and literally saying, so here’s the whole story that we’re going to tell, and people are going to find out in many years and the reactions were like, ‘Oh, great. I like that’. Or ‘I don’t like this snippet’ or whatever. And it’s like, again, our acceptance of the community and getting, getting as many comments as we can, has been very useful for us, ”he explained.

For his part, Steve Dyck, character director, stressed the importance of listening to the community. According to him, the fact that 343 Industries is the guardian of Halo It does not mean that they have always done the right thing for the franchise. This is why they must strive to deliver a product that both fans and themselves like.
It should be mentioned that 343 Industries is not the only Xbox Game Studios studio that worked hand in hand with its community. What happens is that World’s Edge, who are in charge of Age of Empires, also went through a similar process for the creation and development of Age of Empires IV.
