For some of us, whenever we travel by car, it is always more desirable to avoid toll roads. And if you want to save money and time by using the fastest route and avoiding tolls, Google Maps is a great navigation tool that can help. While there is no option to permanently disable toll routes on Google Maps, you can choose to avoid them. This can be done in both the desktop app and the mobile app, and it will only take you a couple of minutes.

In this article, we will show you how to highlight toll-free roads on Google Maps using different devices. We’ll also cover the process to make sure toll roads don’t show up on your future trips.

How to disable tolls in Google Maps on an iPhone

Although Apple Maps is the default navigation app on your iPhone, you can still install and use Google Maps. Both apps give you the option to disable toll roads during your travels, but in this article, we will focus on Google Maps.

The process of turning off tolls on Google Maps is much easier on your phone than it is on the desktop app. This is how it’s done on an iPhone:

  1. Open Google Maps on your iPhone.
  2. Touch the search bar at the top of the screen and enter your destination.
  3. Go to the “Directions” button in the lower left corner of your screen.
  4. Choose your way of transportation.
  5. Choose your current location or the location from which you plan to start your journey.
  6. Navigate to the three points in the upper right corner. Make sure you don’t touch the “Start” button yet.
  7. Select “Route Options” from the pop-up menu.
  8. Move the «Avoid tolls» switch.

Doing this will not only save you money, but perhaps time as well. If you want Google Maps to remember to avoid tolls when searching for your next destination, follow the same steps until you reach the “Route options” menu. Activate the “Remember settings” switch.

Now you can start browsing. All you need to do is tap on the arrow in the upper left corner of the screen, which will take you back to the map. Tap the “Start” button at the bottom of your screen and your journey can begin.

From this point on, Google Maps will remember to show you only the roads where there are no tolls. If you change your mind, go back to the “Route options” menu and re-activate the “Avoid tolls” switch.

If you want to use Google Maps on your iPad, you can use the same method to turn off tolls when you travel.

How to disable tolls in Google Maps on an Android device

If you are traveling by car and want to avoid tolls on the way, you can also enable this feature in Google Maps on your Android device. 4. Choose your way of transportation.
  5. Enter your starting location.
  6. Go to the three dots in the upper right corner of your screen.
  7. Select “Route Options” from the list of options.

While you are in the ‘Route options’ menu, you will see two more options: ‘Avoid motorways’ and ‘Avoid ferries’. You can also choose the distance units (automatic, miles, or kilometers). This navigation setting can be very useful when traveling to distant destinations.

You can also make Google Maps remember these settings. However, there is another way to permanently avoid tolls on Google Maps. This is what to do:

  1. Abre Google Maps.
  2. Tap on your profile picture bubble in the upper right corner of your screen.
  3. Look for “Settings” in the list of options.
  4. Continue with “Navigation”.
  5. Go to “Route Options”.
  6. Move the switch «Avoid tolls».

Now Google Maps will remember these settings and you will not have to enable this feature every time you make a new trip.

How to disable tolls in Google Maps on a PC

The process of deactivating tolls in Google Maps in the desktop application is a little different but not more complicated. Follow the steps below to find out how to do it:

  1. Go to Google maps in your browser.
  2. Find your destination in the “Search on Google Maps” bar in the upper left corner of your window.
  3. Click on the “Directions” button on the left sidebar.
  4. Choose your current location or the location from which you will start your journey.
  5. Select your means of transport.
  6. Click on “Options” on the blue ribbon.
  7. Under “Route options”, check the box “Tolls”.
  8. Go to the “Close” button.

That’s all about it. Since people should not use Google Maps on their laptops while driving, Google Maps allows you to send their directions to your phone. This is a much more convenient option than printing the map. You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. Click on “Send addresses to your phone” on the left sidebar.
  2. Choose whether you want Google Maps to send the directions directly to the app, by email, or by text message.
