How to check if someone else is using your WhatsApp account

Like many other online applications, WhatsApp does everything possible to maintain the privacy and security of its users’ data. With features like one login at a time and two-factor authentication, the platform is relatively secure.

But, like everything connected to the Internet, there are security vulnerabilities that evil people are happy to explore. Due to the nature of WhatsApp, it is essential to act fast if you think your account has been breached.

This article will teach you how to detect suspicious activity on WhatsApp and how to protect your account. Let’s dive in!

To better understand how WhatsApp security works, we will first guide you to log into your account. WhatsApp offers two ways to access; online and through the app (available at iOS and Android).

Using the web version of WhatsApp makes typing a lot easier as you can do it on a keyboard instead of tapping on your phone screen.

  1. Open a WhatsApp web session by selecting the three-dot menu icon in the main WhatsApp window.
  2. Select WhatsApp Web. This opens your camera.
  3. You will be prompted to scan a QR code that you can obtain by opening WhatsApp Web in your browser.
  4. Open WhatsApp Web in your browser.
  5. Scan the QR code in your browser window with your phone’s camera.

The WhatsApp window on your phone should be mirrored in the browser, allowing you to chat and interact as usual.

Check if someone is using your WhatsApp account

WhatsApp is relatively easy to use. Unfortunately, it can be a challenge to spot an intruder if you are not interacting with the application. This scenario is most likely someone who just wants to eavesdrop on your conversations. But, some hackers also want to take over your account.

Regardless of your intentions, we will use this section to inform you of some warning signs that someone is on your account.

Check your WhatsApp activity

First of all, if the other person is using your account, they will leave a trace. Here’s where to look:

Check your messages – For starters, the most obvious signs that someone else is using your account are in your messages. From messages you didn’t send to messages from strangers, this should be your first stop.

When you open WhatsApp, you will first see a list of messages. Review this list to see the messages you didn’t send and the messages you received from people you don’t know.

If you see strange messaging activity, there is probably someone on your account.

Verify your contact information – If the intruder tries to hijack your account, it will start to change your contact information.

Using the WhatsApp mobile app, do this:

  1. Touch the three vertical dots in the upper right corner. Then, tap on ‘Settings’.
  2. Tap your profile at the top of the menu.
  3. Please review the information and verify that it is accurate and up to date.

If something is changed, or there is information here that you do not recognize, you will need to protect your account, which we will discuss a little more in detail below.

Check WhatsApp communications – At this point, you should also check your text messages for any WhatsApp communication. If you are using an iPhone, open Messages and use the search bar at the top to type ‘WhatsApp’. If you are using an Android device, use the magnifying glass to search for WhatsApp text messages.

What we are looking for here is any communication about account changes or account access.

Find new friends

Another telltale sign that someone is on your account is when you have new people or friends. All you need to do to check your contacts on WhatsApp is open the application and tap on the chat icon in the lower right corner.

At the top of the page, you will see the number of contacts (36 in this example). Below that, you need to scroll down and make sure you recognize everyone on the list.

One great thing about WhatsApp is that it will automatically detect your phone’s contacts using the app. So if someone logs into your device, they are likely to see people they don’t recognize.

See WhatsApp Web

If you already use WhatsApp Web, you may know that you can see the last session or any open session by selecting it from the three-dot settings menu. This action is a safe way to find out if someone is using your account.

  1. Open WhatsApp and select the three-dot menu icon in the main window.
  2. Please select Linked devices.
  3. Check the connected devices.

If the camera opens, there is no active WhatsApp web session in progress. If you see a window that shows a computer that is logged in, there is an active session.

Tap on each session, then tap ‘Sign off‘to kick the intruder out of your WhatsApp account.

Unlike other services, this is the only way to see your WhatsApp login activity.

Secure your WhatsApp account

Now that we’ve determined that someone is using your account, let’s start protecting it. Please note that if any of the above situations arise, you will need to act quickly.

Enable two-factor authentication on WhatsApp

If someone has been using your WhatsApp account, they should block it. If you are lucky, it is a brother or partner who is spying on what you are doing. If you’re not so lucky, you could be a hacker stealing your contacts and data and wreaking havoc on your social life. Either way, you have to block it by turning on two-factor authentication.

WhatsApp does not use passwords. Instead, you must enable two-factor authentication. That way, anyone trying to log in will need to enter a verification code.

  1. Open WhatsApp and select the three-dot menu icon in the main window.
  2. Please select Settings and Bill.
  3. Select Two-Step Verification.
  4. Enable it and set your PIN code.

Once configured, every time you open WhatsApp, you will need to enter that PIN code to authenticate. Make sure the PIN is not obvious and that you have further protected your WhatsApp account.

WhatsApp is a very safe application, but as safe as you keep it. Using two-factor authentication is a viable way to lock your account if someone has been accessing it.

Frequent questions

Here are some more answers to your questions about WhatsApp.

What can I do if I lose access to my WhatsApp account?

In the worst case, a hacker has completely taken over your account. When this happens, you are unable to log in and all your account information is in the hacker’s hands. Getting your account back can be tricky. Fortunately, we have an article here that will guide you through the recovery of your WhatsApp account.

I received a text verification code from WhatsApp. Does that mean someone is using my account?

One of the most notorious ways someone can access your WhatsApp account is by obtaining the text verification code. If WhatsApp sends you a verification code via text message, it is best to ignore it.

You can even receive several consecutive codes. The reason for this is that WhatsApp will only send a certain amount of verification codes in a period of time. Then the app will block it if you log out.
