8 things everyone completely missed in Psychonauts 2

Psychonauts 2 is packed with content, so it makes sense that a lot of details are missing.

Psychonauts 2 was finally released in 2021 after fans waited more than 16 years for a sequel to the beloved game Double Fine. The game was well received by fans and also received good reviews from critics.

With Xbox acquiring Double Fine in recent years, the studio finds itself in a place where a third game in the series is plausible. Psychonauts 2 was filled with many secrets, mysteries, and answers to questions fans had for over a decade. With that though, there were a lot of things people missed during their game of Psychonauts 2.

Mr. Pokeylope

Mr. Pokeylope is a fan favorite character from the original Psychonauts who was the pet turtle of Dr. Laboto’s henchman known as Sheegor. This turtle was known for its golden boots that matched the golden crown that rested on its head.

If you visit Otto Mentallis’ laboratory in Psychonauts 2, you can find a turtle with a hat on his head on one of his shelves. It is not clear if this is a reference to Mr. Pokeylope or not, but it is good to imagine that that was the intention.

Fragment of Mundodisco

Terry Pratchett is a name that may not mean much to younger readers looking at this list, but the accomplished author was best known for his series known as Discworld, which consisted of 41 novels.

Psychonauts 2 pays tribute to both this author and the series with a random invention that can be found. Not only does the fiction say the word “Pratchett” on it, it also shows a flat Earth propped up on the back of an enormously large tortoise.

¿Ese es … Jack Black?

Yes, the Mote of Light voice that you hear during the band’s reunion levels in Psychonauts 2 is actually Jack Black. These levels feature a lot of melodic gameplay elements that Black is perfect for, and it seems like he just wanted to work with Tim Shafer and Double Fine again in some way.

Those who managed to avoid pre-release marketing got this surprise, and may not have realized that this character was played by one of Hollywood’s greatest comedic actors.

Eddie Riggs Cameo

Therefore, not only did the voice of comedy legend Jack Black appear in Psychonauts 2, but a character that he had previously voiced for Double Fine also appeared in the game. Anyone who uses clairvoyance on Nick from the mail room after he has a brain will be amazed at how Raz looks through his eyes.

Raz will sport a hard rock biker look that is intended to evoke the iconic design of Eddie Riggs, the main character from Brutal Legend that Jack Black voiced and in which his image was used.

A band returns with a name

It’s easy to forget that Psychonauts 2 takes place literally days after the events of the first game, but there are many connected threads that make the entire adventure feel like one long story.

During the first game, two fellow camp goers by the names of Phoebe and Quentin are forming a gang and can’t decide whether their gang should be Firestarts or Levitators. They seem to have agreed on a band name, as a poster for the Firestarters band can be found in the tree house that is used as a radio station just outside the entrance to the Motherlobe building.

Funhaus Cameos

Now, Double Fine is a development studio that is known for its loyal and die-hard fanbase who just can’t get enough of its quirky, creative, and unique gaming brand. The internet is full of video game personalities who were their passions up their sleeve, and the Willems of Funhaus have expressed how much they love psychonauts.

James Willems and his wife Elyse express their love for the world of Psychonauts whenever they get a chance and that love was rewarded with a cameo in the game. The two can be heard as the rich skeleton couple on the casino level featured in Psychonauts 2.

Ford Cruller instead of Lili

Double Fine tends to be quite detail-oriented in its game development, so this one feels more like a retcon than a bug. At the beginning of the game, you, as a player, receive a summary of the series that serves to bring people up to date on the history of Psychonauts.

In this presentation, Ford Cruller can be seen preparing to help the crew after the events of Psychonauts 1. This was not how it developed in the original game, as it was considered out of order. Lili was present during the climax of the original game, but it appears that in the new recap they swapped her inclusion with Cruller’s.

Revisiting brains

When you get credits in Psychonauts 2, you may think that the only thing left to do is gather collectibles to complete the game, but there is a reveal that should be explored.

In the post-game, most people can now be found within the levels they decide on, and Raz can have additional conversations with them. None of that is life-changing, but it does offer an additional perspective on the personal journeys they went through during the game.
